Headphones?...Ear plugs? I feel her pain.

Dear Prudence,
About six months ago, I got hired at an amazing company and couldn’t have been happier about leaving my old job and its craziness behind. I love the atmosphere and people at my new job but there’s one little problem. In my cubicle area, which I share with three people, I am surrounded by extremely loud eaters. One of my co-workers slurps his coffee so loudly I assume other people around us can hear but just don’t say anything. The other two co-workers chomp on sandwiches or gobble up pasta and other assorted foods so loudly that sometimes I have to get up from my desk and pretend to need to use the restroom. Am I the problem, am I just too sensitive to people’s eating habits? Or is there a way I can ask them to quiet down without becoming the uptight new girl?

  • ::gag::

    Loud eaters are disgusting. If she's sensitive then I am too. And yes, I'd buy some nice headphones and listen to music.
  • I could have written this letter.  UGH.  I think I'm extra sensitive.  I have good ear buds and loud music. My coffee slurping co-work just transferred - yay!  He also ate spicy food at his desk almost every day.  I have a fan in my cube due to this.

  • I am super noise sensitive, to the point where I wonder if I have misophonia. I definitely employ the headphones trick. Thankfully most people don't spend all day eating or drinking at their desks, so it's usually only a short time that I need to put headphones in. I totally feel sympathy for this women because noisy eaters/chewers/slurpers are totally disgusting. But unfortunately you're just going to look like the crazy uptight person if you complain, so suck it up buttercup.

    Side note, twice now I've had coworkers who talk to themselves while they work. I find it incredibly annoying and distracting. Thankfully both have been slackers that only work in short bursts during the day so at least there's that.
  • My next door cubby neighbor is so loud (I've talked about some of the stuff before) and I have headphones in quite often.  Yesterday, she made a comment that another co-worker who is a few doors down from us, "Is so loud, it drives me crazy some days."  I just snorted, giggled a bit, and went on.  I don't think people realize how loud they really are in their little space.  Since everyone wants to go to "shared spaces" b/c of cost or planning, it doesn't really give employees actual space that they really need sometimes.
  • One of my coworkers keeps a sports type water bottle at his desk. The noise he makes everytime he drinks it drives me crazy! He also sighs a lot. And occassionally yells at his computer. I guess at least he isn't a noisy eater...

  • I hear you. There's actually something called mysophonia (I believe that is the spelling), and I'm pretty sure I have it, ha ha. I am so, so sensitive to the sounds of some people's eating that it actually pisses me off to the point of having to breathe deeply! My FI, close family and friends think I'm nuts, but there's something about the way some people eat that's so disgusting to me ha ha
