Has anyone bought polyester table linens instead of renting?

I have found a few places that sell wholesale table linens in our preferred color (gray) for a fraction of the cost of renting linens from local vendors, but they are all 100% polyester. Has anyone done this? Are polyester linens really cheap looking? I don't need them to be luxe, but I also don't want them to be so cheap that it's distracting...

Re: Has anyone bought polyester table linens instead of renting?

  • Most plain tablecloths that you see in restaurants and at weddings are typically 100% polyester because they really don't wrinkle and can easily be washed and dried.

I used polyester tablecloths with a crepe fabric overlay (it is a sheer fabric).

The only way a tablecloth will look cheap is if it is dirty, ripped or made of paper.  But as long as it is clean and pressed even an inexpensive fabric tablecloth will not be distracting (unless it is of course highlighter pink) to your guests.

  • I was happy renting (white was included in my catering package) because of convenience. While it may be cheaper to buy, you'll have to press them and then do something with them afterwards--put them in bags, take them with you, launder them, etc or burden a family member with all that if it's not something your DOC/planner will do for you. I was happy to see linens appear on tables and linens disappear at the end. Food for thought.
  • I purchased used gold satin linens, but am having an overlay. The annoying part is that we will have to get them pressed as they wrinkle easily, which you can notice even under the overlay.

  • I purchased my own (also gray) linens and used a pintuck overlay...the only drawback has been trying to re-sell them to make some of my money back...
  • We bought white poly ones. They weren't what I'd choose to have in my own home, but they were just fine, and no different from what the rental company offered except price-wise. They actually didn't end up getting pressed and that was also not a big deal. Now we use them all the time for parties and such.
  • I got some beautiful things at smartyhadaparty.com.  Nice product and very reasonable prices. I did not even care if we re-sold them because the whole thing was so inexpensive, it barely "dinged" my budget.
  • My tablecloths are ivory and originally from smartyhadaparty, I'm the second owner. I think they look beautiful and have a nice sheen to them. The previous owner told me she had to iron them before the wedding but it wasn't much of an inconvenience, just do it days before the wedding not the day of. I only purchased 12 so it shouldn't take up too much extra time, and I already know I can resell them for what I paid, assuming they don't get stained. Totally worth it to me.
