Ceremony time dilemma

My ceremony time as of now is 6:30 in Venus Garden. Initially, I thought this was great as the sun sets at 6:34 on my date; however, now I am concerned about taking pictures afterwards. I'm fine with taking pictures beforehand, in fact I want to, and I do want a mix of day and night pictures. But any group pictures after the ceremony will basically be in the dark if I keep this time. Plus, I didn't even factor in the possibility of things running behind schedule, which my photographer says happens the majority of the time!

I wanted to move it up to 5:30, but it's booked already, so the next available time is 4:30. I'm just so torn! I've read reviews where people say Venus Garden is beautiful at night, and I'm sure it would be lovely, but it's so hard to decide not having seen it in person. And I'm concerned about my wedding video being dark also. Any insight of advice would be very appreciated!

Re: Ceremony time dilemma

  • I would ask the photographer if he has been to the venue and see what he recommends.
  • If the photographer has all the appropriate equipment and an assistant, I would think it would not be that big a deal.  A couple fill lights on tripods and a remotely triggered flash should be enough to get great pics at dusk.  If using Venus, does that mean you're being forced to use the contract photographer?  They may not have what they need to do good evening pics so in that case I'd advise moving the time up, unfortunately.

  • @aggiespartan That's a good idea, I will ask him that.

@vegasgroom At this point, I am using Imagine for the ceremony only - apparently they will do the ceremony itself and also take pictures for about 15 minutes after, then I can use my photographer (Joey Allen). I'm still on the fence about paying the outside vendor fee since it's $350, but in this case if I keep the ceremony time then it may be worth it...
  • Honestly, things only run behind schedule if people let them. I've been to plenty of weddings that started on time, and ours started on time. Just make sure you pad your timeline leading up to the ceremony, and you should be okay.

Joey Allen is a great photographer and is fully capable of glamorous night shots. I would definitely pay the fee to ensure quality photos. $350 isn't much at all, in the grand scheme of things. You could always take that off of your flowers, favors, invitations, etc.

  • The Venus garden looks well lit at night for pictures so it looks like you should be alright. As long as the photographer your using before Joey Allen is great with lighting and understanding it and not just clicking the shutter at anything.
  • @wrigleyville That's reassuring, thank you. I just spoke with my coordinator too who told me that when weddings run late it's usually by 10 minutes at most, though there are rare exceptions that are later. I am really considering paying the outside vendor fee, although I still might just use Imagine for the video since it comes with our package. And thank you for posting those pics! I really like the way the candlelit walkway looks too, I'd love to add it but it's a $250 upgrade so not sure if it's worth it (it would look so pretty though!).

@nyhollyday That's true, I do love all the pictures of his I've seen, so that's a good point!
