The only thing I have extra is the flex edge beater. Works fine, but I wouldn't ever have thought to buy it (was a gift). I really only use mine to make cake and cookies and stuff.
I only have the attachments besides the three that came with it. I really like the dough hook, it's pretty efficient when I making bread. I also like the ice cream maker attachment. I've seen it being used but I don't own it...yet.
I'm not much help either. I haven't found a need for any attachments. I love having the bread kneading hook though. I think that's often a standard inclusion when you buy one.
I got the slicer/dicer attachment. It works ok. Not effective for any sort of soft vegetable like an onion...it just turned into mush but it worked great for julienning some carrots. It was good for when I was feeling lazy one day and didn't want to chop up a bunch of stuff myself. I kind of want the food processor attachemtn but it's like...over $100 or something so I don't know if we'll get that...we could buy a stand alone food processor that works just as well if not better.
As far as in the bowl stuff we have the flex edge beater, the whisk, the normal beater, and the dough hook. I really love the dough hook! It definitely does the job!
I have the flex edge beater and the shield, and use both all the time. The shield is great for mixing flour/dry ingredients so that it doesn't go everywhere. My friend has the pasta maker attachment and that works pretty well. I helped her make ravioli with it and it turned out really well. It just takes a lot of time that I do not have, so I decided not to get that.
I don't have a lot of additional attachments, but I would recommend getting a glass bowl (in addition to the metal bowl it comes with). Any recipies that include yeast should be made in a glass bowl. Metal bowls actually kill the yeast. If you're planning to make much bread...the glass bowl is a must!
You might also check which attachments your mixer already comes with. Mine came with the dough hook, the standard mixing paddle (not the flex one) and a whisk. Wouldn't want to register for items you're already getting.
I LOVE my mixer by the way! H's cousins went in together on it for us and I use it all the time. Such great quality. I hope you love yours as much as we love ours!
@allusive007 I had no idea about metal killing the yeast! I feel like I made bread one time with my metal bowl and didn't have problems but I'd rather not risk it...plus glass bowls are nice anyway!
I like the slicer and dicer, and I want the glass bowl with the pouring spout! I also really want the one that scrapes the side of the bowl, I think that would be super useful! I also kind of want the pasta attachment, I think it would be fun to make my own pasta, but I'm pretty sure I'd only do it once.
I worked in a bakery for years and we used the artisan and professional line kitchenaid mixers. The yeast will be fine as long as the bowl is not cold and it is steel (all kitchenaid mixers come in steel). Do not use aluminum or copper when baking.
@allusive007, I agree with not registering for things we're already getting with it. Mine came with the standard beater, the wire whip, the dough hook, and the metal bowl. We'll talk about getting a glass bowl. FI's more of the baker than I am, so I'll leave it up to him.
I'm sure we'll love ours! FI's mom got it for us as a very early wedding present -- his grandma had told her to get us a wedding present, and she was an avid baker, so FMIL decided this was what she would have most wanted. It's staying in the box until after the wedding.
@KeptInStitches BOO! Why deny yourself the joy of the mixer???? I may also be on glass of vino No. 2 because I'm stuck working late from home today so don't trust my judgement...BUT H and I opened nearly every single gift we received prior to the wedding and used some of them.
Anyway, I absolutely adore our Kitchenaid. I used to have to mix EVERYTHING my hand and this has made my life soooo much easier. They are seriously the best kitchen tools ever (aside from those mixers that mix things so fast they make the food hot and turn them into soup...)
@lapeanut1018, call me superstitious, but I'm nervous about using anything before the wedding. We opened it to make sure it was in good shape and then put it in a safe place.
Late to the party, but I love my mixer! I've had it for a few years and it came with the regular beater, dough hook, whisk, and a bowl shield. My parents got me the pasta roller and cutter attachments (flat pasta) a couple years ago and they're great. I've registered for the ravioli maker, and am thinking about registering for an extra bowl and maybe that flex beater too since I use my mixer a LOT around Christmas and fairly often through the year.
@500days - Thanks for the clarification! I have some Czech bread (great grandmother's recipe) that my aunt has told me numerious times NOT to use a metal bowl for. I'm glad to know the actual concerns with this now!
I have to say I am jealous of all of you and your Kitchenaid mixers!!! I have no room on my counter (or in a cabinet) for one but I secretly want one!!
