Travel - South America?

We're planning to book in a couple weeks (as soon as the trail permits become available) so I need to stop procrastinating on this...

The part that's already decided: FI and I plan to do the Inca Trail next fall (we're now thinking September.) We'll fly in, spend a couple days in Lima and Cuzco to get acclimated, then do the three day classic hike. That's pretty much set in stone, as it's the reason for the trip, overdone and touristy as it is.

The rest of the trip: originally we had three weeks' vacation but now he'll likely only be able to take two, so we will only want to visit one other area with our second week of time, and I can't decide what that should be. sp I'd love your advice. We've never been to South America at all, but I am familiar enough with all the possibilities (thanks to my old travel agent job and all the Latin American studies classes I took in my undergrad) that I think it's 1000x harder to just pick something because I want to go everywhere!  I desperately need some help narrowing it down because every time I think "Okay, let's go to Brazil and do an Amazon river trip", I then think "No, maybe we should stick to Peru and spend more in-depth time there, see the Nazca Lines and stuff," or "What about Buenos Aires?" or "Maybe we should just do something weird and go to Montevideo or something!"

If it helps: we're pretty adventurous travelers and plan to make this an active, backpacking kind of trip, although we will do a couple nights in luxury hotels, but everything else will be basic. I speak fluent Spanish, FI speaks only English. We've both done solo travel in developing countries (way less developed than anywhere we'd go in South America) and are comfortable getting off the beaten path, at least in Spanish-speaking countries, which is the main reason I'm less enthusiastic about Brazil (because I find I can kind of manage with Portuguese in Portugal, but the Brazilian Portuguese gives me a lot more trouble.) Help?

  • Awesome!! Myself, jdluvr06 & lacqueredlover have all done the hike if you have any questions! Mine was booked through G Adventures which is actually a Canadian company so you should definitely check them out. If you don't already know, you have to be in a tour group that has a permit- you can't just ask for a permit on your own or show up looking to hike. GA was fabulous, they picked us up at the airport in Lima, handled all of our transfers to Cuzco, dinners together, the porters on the hike were so amazing. Not going to lie, I saw other group whose tents and equipments looked so shitty so I'm really glad that I was in a tour with quality items. And the food they cooked was so legit....the porters carried live chicken and propane tanks up the mountain to make us dinner!

Unfortunately I cannot give help with the rest of South America, as I haven't been. We really wanted to go to Quito, Ecqador and the Galapagos but we just ran out of time and money.

But in Cuzco, you have to go here. not many people in our group went but I really wanted to after seeing it on the History Channel and I was so glad I went.

  • Ok I went to the Amazon in Peru and it was freaking amazing.  We stayed at this amazing jungle retreat (which had wifi, so I have some amazing pics of myself on an iphone texting my now FI legit in the middle of the Amazon) and kissing a pirhanna.  I went on a trip with Contiki though since it was my friend and I so we basically didn't have to book anything ourselves.  Heads up about the Inca Trail - it's a LOT of stairs haha.  I'm in pretty good shape and my legs are hurting just thinking about it now.

There is a ton of stuff to do in Peru, a lot of people we met on our travels spent 3 weeks there (we spent 10 days total and did about half the Inca trail, Cuzco, Lima, some random little towns and the Amazon.)  My FI and I are talking about Brazil and Argentina for our honeymoon and I know people who have loved it but honestly, I fell in love with Peru.  Now, here are some pics:

Once my friend and I finished the Inca Trail at Machu Picchu (it poured the entire time, I was literally soaked but so awesome)

We climbed a sketchy staircase above the tree canopy line in the Amazon

    Yeah I kissed a pirhanna

Alright now I wanna go back to Peru

  • If you want to go to any remote areas of the Amazon it can take a really long time to get there. Like a day on either end of the trip. If you don't have that kind of time, it might be worth a trip by itself some time.

We went to Ecuador last year. Gorgeous! The cloud forest was really phenomenal if you like to hike. We stayed in an eco-lodge that generates their own power, a lot of their own food, etc. Really cool. If you're interested PM me and I can send you details.

  • I love this forum. Even today. Maybe especially today, but you guys are seriously such a help.

@jenna8984, I've got the Machu Picchu thing handled, fortunately - I've booked probably twenty of them for other people so I am all good with companies etc., and the permit restrictions. I hated that industry but it definitely comes in handy when booking our own travel.
@lacqueredlover, we are hikers and skiers so we are feeling probably too confident about our leg muscles, lol. Fortunately we spend a lot of time at pretty high altitudes already, too, so we're hoping that won't affect us too badly. FI has well-managed asthma, though, so we're going to have to make sure we kick up our summer hiking a notch this year to prep.
@southernbelle0915, we hadn't really thought much about Ecuador, actually, and I don't know why. We do like to hike so that might be worth more investigation (although we also might want to do something different after the Inca Trail.)
@butterscotchjbeans, we've been sandboarding in the Namibian desert so I don't think that would be something we'd want to do again (I had to go skydiving to get the sand out of my ears...) We're also not really beach people, so I'm not sure if that's really what we're looking for.

I think I'm going to do a little Ecuador research and think seriously about that for sure. We are the independent type so, apart from the 4 days we'll need to be the group for the Inca Trail, we really would prefer to wander on our own. I may pick up a group tour brochure though and see what kind of two-week itineraries they do so I can build my own based on that, though.

  • This is a dream trip of mine! If I were going all the way down to Peru, I'd sign up for a couple day cruise to the Galapagos too.

  • That's really good that you already have some time in high altitude. That was the killer for me! I ran a half marathon at 10 minute miles a week before my trip so I was in excellent shape and I had times on the mountain that I just could not breathe. It was super frustrating!
Oh yea, forgot you spend some time as a travel agent :)
My thing is that I was to see the "7 modern wonders of the world". So Machu Piccu is one of them, and I've been to Chtizen Itza and Great Wall. If I were you I'd hit up Mexico for Chitzen Itza or Brazil for Christ the Redeemer Statue!

Those cruises are expensive!  It's not like hoping on a Bahamas cruise from Florida.  Or, at least not the ones I've seen.  It is on my list of things to do!

@jenna8984 - I've heard it doesn't matter how in shape you are......the altitude sickness can hit anyone.  When we went to Peru earlier this year we took the altitude sickness pills.  They really helped....we didn't feel the effects as many others we met.

I'll second taking some time to head to the rainforest/Amazon while in Peru. I studied abroad in central/South America and during our time based in Cuzco we took a trip to the rainforest. We did a mini whitewater rafting trip down a tributary of the Amazon to a lodge type place in the rainforest where we stayed for a couple nights and did hiking, ziplining, other boat trips, etc. The lodge was fairly primitive...electricity only a couple hours at night, basic beds, etc. but the experience was awesome. I'm not really any help with names of anything we did because it was part of my study abroad experience so it was mostly planned out for me.

Ecuador was also awesome (I'm dying to go back and visit the Galapagos islands) and Panama has a special place in my heart. Pretty much I love every place I've been in central and South America :)
  • I took a "cruise" down the Amazon river on a little wooden ship. There were only 10 other people with us aside from our guide and the ship's crew. We went down a branch of the river that isn't typically traveled by tourists and was super remote. Some highlights:

In the day time we'd sit under the canopy on the top deck while the rain came down (it looked like it was coming down in solid sheets. Insane. And the sound of it was amazing). It only rained a few times, and when it stopped there would be a rainbow over the river and macaws would fly right over our heads.

At night we'd stand along the railings and watch bats, and mysterious glowing eyes on the shoreline, and just listen. The sounds, oh my god.

It's the only place in the world with PINK freshwater dolphins. They followed our boat and when we got to a safe point on the river we jumped in and swam with them.

We'd go in little metal boats to take excursions. One of the excursions was to go fishing for piranha which we then ate for dinner. Another excursion was a long hike into a village and he happened to arrive just as the shaman was starting a ceremony to heal a snakebite. We were invited to watch.

This trip was totally life-changing and amazing and beautiful.

I could go on and on, but basically what I'm saying is, GO DOWN THE AMAZON RIVER.

  • Oh I totally forgot that we saw Giant River Otters on the Amazon too!  I was sad I didn't get to see the Pink dolphins that @novella1186 mentioned but the giant river otters were awesome.  And seeing the Caiman at night were crazy!
