Has Anyone Ordered A Pre-Owned Dress

I am considering getting a pre-owned dress. Has anyone had luck with this? I know it will be altered, but what if it just doesn't work on me? Any advice.
Thanks.

Check out the return policy before ordering and see if you can get dress measurements to see if it'll fit you.

But why not just buy a dress with the budget you're spending on a used dress?

  • It's easier to buy clothing online in general if you have an easy body type to fit. If you are very particular and you only like a few shapes and styles on your body, it is much riskier. Ditto if you are very short or tall or have body parts less proportionate.

If you're worried, I'd try to go into a salon and see if they carry the dress (harder if it's an older gown) so you can at least try it on even if it's a sample size or whatever. If you can't find a shop that has it, I'd look for a very similar style from any designer as well as anything from that designer so you can get an idea of fit etc. At least then you're not ordering blind.

I'd also look up the size chart for the designer (as well as what's listed on the website you're buying from) and measure very, very carefully (ideally you'd get someone who knows how to do it properly to do it for you, but you can look online for an explanation of exactly how and where to measure.)

Ultimately I think this is a route that's better for people who have either tried on the dress before or who are very laid-back. Like, I ordered mine online from the David's clearance, sight unseen and just from the measurements and it's fine, but I'm not the kind of girl who cares that much. It fits and it's white and my mother will be happy and at $99 I had not much to lose.

  • what about researching bridal consigments i visited a few and the ones i did 85% of the stock was sample gowns they got from the designers that were discontinued or from bridal salons. the rest of the gowns were consigment gowns from brides

with bridal consigments you can find a wide range of designers and it saves you from having to visit many salons just to get to try those designers

they have sizes ranging from 4-30 and you can often get really high end gowns for a steel

check out bridepower.com its the website for the hit tlc show i found the gown they are located in ma and they get a lot of high end gowns they discount  a lot look at the gowns in your size range to get a feel as to what the prices are so you have an idea of what you like in terms of designers

also gowns can be altered down 2 sizes but often cant be taken out and bridal runs extreemely small i had to go up 2 sizes in my dress but at places like davids bridal most of the gowns run true to your street size
  • Some preowned dresses haven't been altered.  I bought mine off of preownedweddingdresses.com and it was never worn - the bride decided it wasn't the one and left it with the salon.
