Dress Help- Adding Sleeve

Hi all!
I purchased my dress from David's Bridal and will be having alterations done elsewhere. Here's my dress: image
I got the dress in ivory. I loved the way the dress fit me, but I'm concerned about my arms. I hate showing my arms. I came across this image that another Knottie posted of the sleeves she added to her dress: image
Would something like this go well with that dress, or would I be making it look terrible? I'm not against other suggestions.

Re: Dress Help- Adding Sleeve

  • I think if you did those sleeves with that dress, it would look overwhelming. However, I think you could do a lace cap sleeve (or longer) and it would be pretty.
  • I'm googling "long lace cap sleeve" and not really seeing anything I like.
Mostly it looks like your suggestion covers the shoulders. It's my upper arms (below shoulder, above elbow) that I want to cover.
Do you have an image of what you're suggesting?
  • What about tulle/chiffon kind of like Belle's yellow dress? I'm getting a Belle feel from that skirt.

The fluttery sleeves I think would fight too much with the beading and pick ups.
  • I don't get why you would buy a strapless dress if you absolutely don't want to show your arms, but I guess that ship has sailed.

Have you looked at DB's options? They have several sleeves that can be added to their gowns, as well as a number of boleros and jackets to put over them. You definitely need a more fitted sleeve than the one you linked with such a voluminous dress.

  • I agree that sleeves may be too much with that gown, but if you're dead set on it maybe a simple and tight sleeve to your elbow would be ok. Something kinda like this but without the ruching.

  • Maybe you could buy some lace that is the same as what is on your dress and make some.  Inspiration/examples:

Or you could wear a lace jacket thing with it, like this bride did:

  • I agree with everyone else.  You need fitted sleeves for that dress.

  • Honestly, I think if you add sleeves to most dresses that don't already have them, it DRAWS attention to the arm.  Look at other pictures of brides who are around your same size/shape - do you notice their arms?  I ask this because you're going to be more critical of yourself than anybody else.

Did you happen to try any dresses on with sleeves/straps?  I know I found them a little restrictive and just didn't like how they felt at all.  Also - I thought they made my arms look broader and stand out more.

I agree with the bolded.  If you look at photos of people who add sleeves (try looking on the plus size board), 99% of the time, the sleeves just don't "go".  They look like "oh, look at these random sleeves that were added, so you don't look at my arms!".   Where, the arm itself would have just been an arm.
