Horse in my wedding...!

Any other horse girls included their best friend in their wedding? The venue we are looking at is literally down the road from where I keep my 27 year old Arabian I have had for 17 years now. Wondering what other brides have experienced. I want it to be an elegant rustic wedding. My only fear with including him in the wedding is the added stress of keeping him quiet and calm for the event. I would love to hear from you!

Re: Horse in my wedding...!

  • Umm I really don't think this is a great idea. I've read a lot of horror stories on dogs at weddings and having something as large as a horse at a wedding has a huge potential for trouble.

First: Logistics, how would he get there? Who would be in charge of him? Would you ride him down the aisle?

Second: Poop, enough said here. I would be less than thrilled to walk in horse shit in my nice heels or in your case potentially get it on my gown.

Third: Liability, what if he freaks out and kicks someone? Or worse?

Maybe just use some of the time for photos doing some pictures with him, but that would be as far as I would really recommend.
  • Check with your venue before making any plans. I can't imagine all wedding venues would be ok with a horse in the mix. Admittedly I think it would be pretty amazing to see a bride ride in on her horse, but logistics would have to be highly organized beforehand so that you can still focus on your wedding and have someone who knows what they're doing manage your horse. I don't know much about horses, but the fact that you are concerned about him being calm and quiet for the ceremony sounds like it could be a stressful situation for him. I would worry about unpredictable behavior (kicking, biting, general panic, trampling, etc). If you do ride or walk him in, I would suggest not up an aisle between a large crowd of people, but maybe behind the "altar" area where you could ride in and then hand him off to a professional handler. Alternatively, you could always have a photographer capture some pictures with you and your horse in your dress after the wedding.

I would just try to get a picture or two with him and skip trying to bring him to the ceremony or reception.  Large crowds can stress horses out, and I'm sure you don't want to cause him any undue stress. Your horse will be happier not being at the wedding.

  • Thanks for the input. I think I will have some photos with him before hand. And no, I was never planning on riding him down the aisle, haha. That's just silly.

Man, way to call me out! I still like my description - and I'm stickin' to it. Haha.
Thank you .. lots of negative nancys on here about the whole deal. I think my wedding dress will be happier I just took some photos with him and didn't go all out cowgirl. Horsehair is impossible to get out of anything and everything ;)

I'm a fellow horse girl and love your thought. However, I'd have to agree that having him there is an added concern you don't need on your wedding day.  Love the idea of the pix ahead of time (Your profile picture is just Beautiful).   My fiancé and I are still deciding what we are going to do for our wedding day. Having a difficult time keeping it small (under 50) without offending someone. He suggested we take our horses south (we live in Michigan) & find a place to be married (elope) and then spend our honeymoon with our two horses trail riding & enjoying our time together.

Umm.. can I cancel my whole wedding and do the same?! That sounds so romantic and such a great way to celebrate. Something you will remember forever. And lucky your fiance has caught the horse fever - or did he already have it when you met? I'm working on mine slowly, haha. He has agreed to a mini pony at our future home - hoping to work him up to the full sized deal ;)

Anyways .. what a truly wonderful idea. Best of luck to you!

My best friend included her pony that she's had for 20 years. She didn't include him IN the wedding - a girl from her barn bathed him and trailered him to their photo location after the ceremony and she did a few photos with him, then he was loaded up and hauled back to the barn. She wasn't stressed about it at all, but definitely didn't consider having him AT the ceremony itself.

  • I love the idea of you taking some photos with him beforehand.

Also, there's a whole equestrian inspired wedding here on TK under the Real Weddings tab. She had some horse inspired elements because she's been riding horses her whole life. You may want to check that out as well.
