Meteroite wedding bands?

Hey Knotties,

Does anyone have any experience with these? I mentioned meteorite-inlaid bands to my FI and we both really like the idea of it. But then I looked some up, and yeesh, pretty pricey. They are especially pricey if the band is made of gold. They become more affordable if we use titanium, but I have sensitive skin and I don't know if titanium would cause irritation. Usually I react to cheaper metals, and I literally don't think I've ever worn any titanium. Is that something that generally causes reactions? And does anyone have any experience with meteorite jewelry in general? It sounds great but is it worth the investment? Thanks!

  • If it's implant grade titanium, it's actually less reactive than other metals. Those are the only earrings I can wear.

Meteorites are iron-nickle debris from space.  They are not precious metals or rocks in themselves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteorite
Most people who have allergic reactions to metal are sensitive to nickle, copper or iron.  This is what these meteorites are!
There are lovely wedding bands available from Walmart for very reasonable prices.

These are 14K gold, and will hold their value.

  • The meteorite bands that I'm looking that are inlaid with meteorite but the bands themselves are made of gold or titanium. So I know about the nickle but I'm not too worried as long as it's not touching my skin.

  • Meteorite is ok for me as long as it's surrounded by palladium based white gold (my necklace is that), and I know I can wear palladium white gold and implant grade titanium without problems. Aircraft grade titanium is hit and miss on me. If I can refinish it to mirror finish, I'm ok. If I can anodize it (no matter finish grade), I'm ok but I need to get it anodized yearly. Platinum is hit and miss, depends on what else is in. Niobium is safe for me, and it's generally not reactive, but it's a heavier metal than titanium. Niobium however has the ability to be permanently finished black. My eyebrow has a titanium curved bar with black niobium ends.

I routinely react to 18K yellow gold, and have reacted to everything under 14K. Gold itself is not the problem, it's the other metals. 24K is fine, but way too soft.

ETA: I don't know why my boxes almost never work. I see them in the edit box but then they don't post right.

But it is going to touch the skin of your adjacent fingers. Titanium
is a hypoallergenic metal, but that won't protect the places where your fingers rub the outside of the band. And if you already know your skin is sensitive to nickel, you should probably skip the meteorite inlay. Keep in mind too, titanium can't be sized. Gold, palladium, and platinum can. Sterling silver too, of course, but it's really a bit too soft for daily wear.

  • That's true, it'll touch the skin of my other fingers. Duh doi. Maybe I can find one that's encased.
