Let's talk camera

I want a new camera, our old ones flash broke and my birthday is coming up...

I'm pretty sure I want a Canon Rebel but there's 3 different types of rebels and I don't understand the difference or know what I need.
I just want a good, nice camera. T takes amazing photos and we've wanted a good camera for a long time now.
Suggestions?

My FI just got me the Canon Rebel T2i, but it cost about $800. I don't know the difference between each of the rebels, but I absolutely love mine and it's really easy to use.

I have the Rebel XS, I love it and I don't miss the small difference in features that the XSi has. The XSi is the newer model and the LCD screen is a bit bigger on the back and it has some better remote shooting capabilities.

I shoot just for fun so ultimately I didn't think it was worth spending the extra money. There are some good comparison charts online that I used to make my decision.

From what I've read the XS would be fine for amatuer like me and I would have no need to upgrade to the XSi.

I don't know anything about the T2i. You're a lucky girl though because it seems super nice

Those of you with Rebels- do they seem too bulky to carry around or are they alright?

They are larger than a standard digi camera. I used to keep my small compact sony camera in my purse all the time and I cant do that with the Rebel.

In actually using it, it is not bulky or heavy -- it actually is very easy to hold and very comfortable in my hand. I hope that helps.

It is and I am. It was given to me at our shower, but is really my wedding gift from him. He knows how much I wanted it to take pictures on our honeymoon but wanted to give me time to practice with it.

I take mine on vacation. When we're flying I carry it and my other lenses in a Jill E Bag as my personal item. Epiphanie also makes some cute (though expensive) camera bags that look more like a purse. I have a comfortable camera strap that makes it easy to carry at my side. Its definitely more of hassle to carry around then a smaller digital but I think its worth it.

you want the Rebel t2i. It has mos tof the specs of the 7D buy cannon at half the price. It also take amazing HD video so it is a 2 in 1. Fi is huge Cannon SLR person. STarted with a rebel years ago, the upgraded to a newer one , He bought the 7 d in Jan, and was so angry about the t2i because the specs were so close for less money. there is a camera site called DP review. They have great info on cameras .

On carrying it around. We have a backpack for our camera stuff when we travel. We always pack a small bag too incase we just want 1 extra lens where we are going. You get used to carrying it. They cann not make you check the camera equipment, if you do it will get stolen. I love the JillE bags they are so cute but, he does most of the camera stuff.

If you are looking to buy an SLR, I suggest going to dpreview.com. Its a great camera website and you can do side-by-side comparisons to cameras that you are interested in.

I started out in Pentax, my grandpa gave me his old film camera in which I can still use his old lenses on my new DSLR camera today (granted I have to manually focus on the old lenses). Right now you really can't go wrong in picking a DSLR camera, its basically like a computer, they are constantly making bigger more advance cameras for the new SLR users. I currently have the Pentax kx, love it, fast shutter speed rate, great low light capabilities and small/light enough that it doesn't kill me when I'm wearing it or shooting for a whole day of family stuff. It doesn't hurt that it comes in colors too. Did I mention it is under $600? (Currently $550 w/kit lense at B&H)

Any of the Rebels sound like great options for what you would like to use them for.

I will pimp out this awesome camera bag seller from Etsy. I bought one and used it on our honeymoon. It's big enough where you can throw in a few other things and leave the purse at home. I have bigger nicer camera bags at home, but when we were in Mexico, I didn't want to have a camera bag that had "Canon" on the outside that screamed "this has a nice DSLR and several lenses inside me!"

I have a nikon DSLR and while I love it it's bulky and I hate carrying it around when going out with friends. We've dropped it once and lost a lens from it because we had some drinks. We're always really careful and hang onto the strap thing, but that one time it got away from us.

H has 4 cameras so he uses his backpack to carry them around and he never leaves the house without 2 cameras.

I am going to get myself a point and shoot that I can throw in my purse for outtings and events of the like.

<div>Definitely follow TSP advice about a more purse-like camera bag. An old friend recently got her camera stole out of a friend's car. Plus you just here way too many horror stories of cameras getting stolen. If you can minimize the look of a camera bag when out an about places, the safer your camera. I'm definitely paranoid when mine is sitting somewhere other than my house. </div>
