DIY with etching cream? Really as easy as it looks?

Has anyone DIY'd any glassware with etching cream?  Any problems if so? I want to try it on a casserole dish for my mom as a gift, but all the tutorials I am watching seem too good to be true.  Is it really as easy as it looks? I just want it to turn out well.

  • It's not hard, per se, but it's easy to screw up. You have to be sure that the stencil is taped down really well so none of the etching cream doesn't have any small spaces to get under. I find it's way easier working with flat surfaces than curved things like vases and glasses.

  • I etched 200 wine glasses for one of my wedding favors.
I had to take breaks because my fingers would get sore, but I think they turned out great.

If you're using a vinyl stencil it will make things so much easier.  Just make sure all of the air bubbles are out around the edges and you will be golden.

Do you already have a stencil/design?  I might be able to dig up the name of the Knottie who collaborated with me to design the stencil.

I say they look like flamingos, but they are really 2 cranes intertwining their necks into a heart.
