Have the Dress..Now Need to get Everything Else

Hello...I have been lurking for a bit. I got my dress back in October from DB. I am starting to look into everything else to go along with it. Let me first post a link for my dress:here (I purchased it in white, which a picture of that color is not shown).

I have been reading threads on here and researching online, but I am still very lost on when it comes with what the wear underneath. I am clueless when it comes to shapewear as I have never wore it before. I went to Kohls and Boston Store the other day and tried one of almost everything, but really was not crazy about any of it. My main focus is my stomach area. The dress itself is pretty flattering and I am trying to get serious about working out and eating better (working a desk job has been killer on my body these past few years and metabolism is finally catching up), but I would still like something to help me out a bit to smooth things out. Any suggestions with this style of dress and my target area of what to wear...spanx, waist cincher, bustier, etc.?

Is it absolutely necessary I get a slip? I feel it looks fine on its own and do not need/want to it to "enhance" it. The description online for the dress says "fully lined" if that means anything, but there are a few layers already in the dress. My other worry is if the dress will rub. Unfortunately, the dress is at my parents house, so I can't remember off the top of my head if there is a layer built in that won't rub, but if there is not, would a basic dress slip work also work?

For alterations I know I need a bustle, but I have been thinking about having the zipper taken out and a corset put in. The dress surprisingly fits pretty perfect right now, so I do not believe I need anything taken in or out, but in the last year of trying to lose weight, I have fluctuated a bit. My question is, would a corset be a good "safe measure" to get to compensate for whatever my weight ends up being if it's down a bit or the same as currently (I would want to lose about 5-10 lb). I was also considering it to have better posture on my wedding day, I am tall, so I have bad posture and slouch a lot as it is.

Last question, I bought some basic white flats and they are not the same white as my dress, will this look bad? I know my shoes won't be too noticeable since it is a ball gown, but I guess I am still paranoid. I was thinking of jazzing them up myself. My main color is purple, so I wanted to get purple lace and use fabric glue like this. Do you think this would help make the different shade of white not as noticeable? If not, then I might try to return them while I still can.

I apologize for so many questions! I am happy for any advice for any of the questions/concerns.

  • Your dress is very pretty!

Since it is a ballgown I am not sure your trouble area (tummy) will really be that noticeable.  But if you would feel more comfortable with something I would suggest spanx.  I have a pair that hits just above my waist and go down to mid thigh.  They help to smooth things out while still allowing you to pull them down to go pee if necessary.  Also, since they go down to mid thigh they help with any thigh chafe, especially if you get hot.

As for a corset, I would be hesitant about that.  Since the detailing around the waist goes all the way around the back, a corset could interfere with that detailing.  Alterations typically take place a month to two months prior to your wedding. So adjustments can be made even up to the week before your wedding if necessary.  If you are concerned about posture you could see if an inner corset could be added.  If you are concerned about your weight fluctuating a few pounds, a week or two leading up to your wedding just remember to drink a lot of water and try to cut back on the salt to help with reducing bloating.  And you could also make an appointment with your alterations person the week prior to your wedding for a final fitting just to make sure everything is good to go. But I am sure you will be fine.

I am sure your shoes will be fine against your dress.  With a long dress no one will see your shoes.  I had an off white dress (diamond white I think was the color) and my shoes were more ivory but the difference was so different only I could really tell and that was mainly because I knew the colors were different.  I do think adding some purple lace would be really cute and add a fun pop of color to your shoe.  Don't be overly concerned about your shoes though.  As long as they are comfortable and you like them then that is all that matters.

  • I wore a ballgown for my dress.  The shapewear did very little because it is a ballgown, but I wanted to make sure there was no thigh chaffing.  I just went with Jockey Skimmies - they are 'light/medium' support, the material was very breathable so I didn't get too hot under the dress.

I agree about the corset will probably cut into some of the details of the dress.  You can probably schedule your LAST fitting 1-2 weeks before your wedding if you want to keep the zipper back.  There really isn't much wiggle room for gaining/losing.  With a corset there is a little wiggle room but still probably no more than 5lbs.  This is something you'd probably want to talk over with your seamstress.

Your shoes won't matter.  I made a HUGE deal about shoes, bought about 4 pairs and nobody even saw the pair I wore!

  • Thank you Maggie0829 and Dignity100!

I never thought about a corset messing up the design, so I probably will scratch that idea. My worries came from when I picked the dress up from DB my mom asked about alterations and the girl said I needed to schedule my appt. by February at the lastest (wedding is in Sept.) and they often have to turn people away if they wait to late, because that is a popular time of year. That did strike me as very early for alterations since things can change in a few months. I will probably end up going somewhere else for alterations then so I can do it later. I have to ask, but I believe FSIL's MIL does them or works for an alterations place, because I know they told me she did her wedding dress a few years ago.

Also thank you for confirming my worries about shoes as well! :) I hope adding the lace on works out. I originally wanted purple flats, but I can not really find any I like or are not out of my size.

  • Definitely go to a private tailor. DB's timeline is way too early. My wedding was in September and I didn't start alterations until late July.

That is what I will most likely end up doing, although I probably should clarify with them if they meant I should book an appointment by February or I actually need to come in by February.

  • Keep in mind that DB's alterations are a little pricey.  I know you mentioned corset.  One of my dress requirements was a corset back because I was having a destination wedding and wanted a little wiggle room on my weight and I knew the corset would give me that.

I really liked a dress a DBs that was 2 sizes too small and on clearance/discontinued.  So the seamstress looked to see if she could make it fit by adding a corset and the estimated charge was $75.  The seamstress I used charged $55 to add a corset and another seamstress charged $45 to add a corset.  Thankfully the dress I purchased had a corset already so I didn't need to.

Also if you're going to use DB's alterations departments - make sure you read reviews.  The week before I got married I had a facial and the girl who did my facial was getting married the next Friday so we were comparing stories.  She purchased her dress through DBs and had it altered there - they ruined it 2 weeks before her wedding; DB did make things right (gave her a full refund and a discount on her re-select since her original dress was discontinued).

I apologize for digging up a zombie thread of mine. Shoes and undergarments are taken care of now I think (find out for sure at my first fitting next week).

My next dilemma is jewelry. I dont wear much jewelry on a regular basis other than my e ring and earrings (non dangling) and occasionally a bracelet. I've been scratching my head on this I think because of the design around the waist I want to make sure I get something that isn't going to be too much. I'm probably wearing my hair down. Since I got it in white not ivory, the design around the waist is more silver than what is showed in the picture. Anyone got suggestions?

  • I think I'd try to find a bracelet with a similar motif, then, and just wear some small studs that match whatever bracelet you get.

If you decide you want to wear a necklace, I'd keep it simple and make sure it hits about halfway between the base of your neck and neckline of the dress.

Sorry for a delayed response. I ended up picking up this necklace and earring combo when I was at the store the other day. I was thinking maybe a simple bracelet like this in white?

    Thanks!
