This once anti-wedding girl joined... The Knot?!

For years I was all about not really having a wedding.  I got engaged 11 days ago to my best friend of 9 years (but only boyfriend for 6 months- when we realized it was love) and although my fiancé always mostly agreed with the no wedding plan- after a few days of engagement he revealed he kind of wants to have a wedding after all- and I caught a bit of the wedding bug myself!   We are in the process of a long adoption (adopting a baby girl from another country) and we feel not only would it be a good way to distract myself over the next months to go (we are over a year into the adoption process now- a beautiful and yet painfully long process!) but also you only get one chapter in life to have a wedding... why not!?

So suddenly I've done a bit of a 360 and love the idea and specialness of planning a wedding- especially since it means so much to my future husband.

We are aiming for September 2015 (I know- soon in the wedding world!) and aiming for a somewhat lower budget wedding (under 10k) for a small party of just 50 close friends and family.

Happy to be here and hope to learn a lot about something I know nothing about! :)  Ps- here's the gorgeous sapphire ring he picked out- ethically sourced and exactly what I wanted... I may have hinted at sapphire.  One is taken in daylight- one is taken the night he proposed.

Ps. One quick question- any reason my timeline ticker thing and what not doesn't show up!?  Any help would be great!

  • PPs. As charming as the user name is- anyway to make my name not just

    Knottie68700184!?

    Thanks in advance!
  • Click on your Knottienumbers name in the upper right of your screen, then choose "account," and there will be links in blue kind of center top to do things like change your name. Congrats, happy planning, and welcome to TK!

  • Thanks so much!! Will do it right now! :)
  • Hmmmm mine doesn't seem to let me change it. It's grayed out.  Any tips?
  • You're most welcome. Word of advice: lose the smiley faces. We can be a tough crowd, and I don't want to see you get scoffed at for them on the active boards.

Haha that is so funny!  People don't like smiley faces?  I've been a business owner for 9 years now and exclusively work with women (often very hormonal women who are about to have babies or just had babies) and so when writing emails- I include a smiley face much of the time as it often helps women sense the tone of my voice- and take things better when laying down customer service policies and what not.  I would never think that would be an issue on a forum of women!  Too funny- I will go delete a few of mine so it's more Knot friendly ;)

To have a REAL wedding, all you need is two adults who want to get married and are legally free to do so, an officiant, a license, and witnesses.  White pouffy dresses are not required.

If you are going to have guests, then you need to have a reception after the ceremony.  Cake and punch?  Pizza?  Hotdogs?  Formal brunch? Sit down dinner at the country club?  It's all OK, depending on the time of day.

You have a budget of $10,000 for 50 guests?  Great!  Lots of brides have less than that.  It should be very doable.

Your ring is beautiful.  Congratulations!  We will be glad to help you plan a beautiful wedding.

  • I think I just meant I was always more of a go away and elope kind of girl- turns out FI is a invite people, have a party, etc. kind of guy.  I think any wedding is real- big ones with attendants I just didn't think were for me so warming up to the idea.  Me in a pouffy dress tho.... now that is a scary idea for this tom girl!  Found some great simple ones on j crew and mod cloth tho- so starting there.

Thank you! Looking forward to planning it.

I didn't see your name update post earlier. Sorry! Hmmmm....that's weird about the name. I wonder if you have to wait a few days from joining. Let's see if a Knot god knows, even though she may not see this until Monday. @KnotRiley‌ can you help? Also, you should delete that pic. It has your email address showing. Internet safety.

  • You're in the wrong spot...go up where it says Erin and click on "my account". Not the my settings or account options. Then there will be an option for edit profile name. Took me a while to find it!

Anyways, welcome. Good luck with your planning and with your adoption process!!

  • Congrats!  Your ring is beautiful!  Although I don't have one, I've always had a penchant for wedding rings/sets that include a colored gem stone.

And very doable both time and money-wise, especially with 50 guests.  My DH and I went from proposal to wedding in seven months.  And, although my mom was gracious enough to pay for most of the wedding, I'm pretty sure it was under $5K.  We had 35 guests.

  • absolutely stunning ring! and happy planning, sounds like you have enough time to plan an amazing wedding

  • Gorgeous ring! Congratulations! H and I had a wedding for approximately 50 people for ~$10k. Very doable.
  • Congrats! I totally understand-- I was a "let's elope" girl and DH was not, but once in the swing of things I enjoyed planning our 70-person affair.

I have to say I'm biased when I gush on how gorgeous your ring is... because mine is nearly identical (just no diamonds on the band).  Yay for sapphires!

  • Congratulations! I'm with you too, I'm not a huge party or attention person and don't like the idea of spending a lot of money on one day, but as soon as he proposed it's like something snapped in my brain and I was like "Must buy wedding magazines... must obsess over tiny details..."

Given, my wedding could totally still be a clusterfuck because I enjoy looking at shit more than making actual decisions.

  • Thank you so much everyone! Appreciate all the welcoming comments.  And too funny I'm not the only one who was not into the idea of a wedding... and FI was more so... and now I'm totally about planning it.  It's been a surprisingly fun distraction from other things in life.

@thisismynickname- aw thanks!  I love sapphire too.  So glad he picked that.

Thanks!  The wait is excruciating some days- but hopefully wedding planning will distract me quite a bit for awhile! It certainly has stopped me from spending loads of money weekly on baby clothes.
