Hey guys, I need cat help. My new cat is a little hellian. He pees on stuff, knocks over the garbage and drags it all over the house, and now he's teaching my resident cat to do the same. Has anyone else had a badly trained cat? How do you train it when you never catch him doing the bad things. I've only caught him knocking over the garbage once and I sprayed him with water, as recommended by my vet, but my vet also said you can't do that if you're not catching them in the act. Anything will help. Thanks guys. ETA: this shitty paragraph thing is getting really old.

Re: Need Cat Help

  • I can't help with the garbage but I can help with the pee. One of my cats kept peeing on the guest bed. We got her stop by buying this stuff from Petsmart that keeps kitty off of the furniture you don't want her on. I forget what it is called but if you ask they can show you where it is.
  • Thanks. I'll definitely check that out.
  • What size is your garbage can? Are we talking kitchen can? My cats would have to work incredibly hard to knock that over. Put something heavy in the bottom, like a phone book?
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Did you have your other cat first? He might be acting out because he's either not getting enough exercise, and the peeing might be because he doesn't have his own littler box or a "safe place" of his own. Another option with the peeing is, do you possibly have any neighborhood cats that come around and look in the window or something that might set him off feeling that 'his territory' is being invaded?

I've watched a lot of that "My Cat from Hell" show (it's so darn amusing) and most of the times cats act out like this it's because one or more of those reasons. It takes a lot of trial and error to correct it permanently, but a good start would be to find a cat toy he's interested in and spend some time each day playing with him, and also either clean the litter box more often or try getting two.

  • I want to echo what @porkchop926 said - make sure everyone has their own litterbox (and actually, the general rule of thumb is have as many litter boxes as cats plus an extra)!! And clean them every. single. day. (Not to assume that you aren't already doing these things, but just to make sure!)

The squirt bottle is a good one, we also have "Stop It Spray" which is made by Sentry - they also have a lot of good stuff for calming cats down. The stop it spray has been great for our one cat, although you're right, you do need to catch them "in the act" or very close.

Are either of your guys food-motivated? Treats work extremely well with one of our cats to encourage good behavior (not so much with the others). That can be a huge help.

  • Thanks guys! Our garbage can is very large... The same on ei used to use in our house of 6 so I really have no idea how they knock it over. It has a lid, but for now we're keeping it in the porch off the kitchen. They each have their own litter boxes ng eyre in the same room, but on the opposite sides of the room. I'll have them both checked with the vet.
