Dress Confusion

I am not getting married until January 2016 but my mom is in town this week so we went dress shopping #1. I found everything I was wanting in a dress and in my budget with doing some custom changes to make it perfect.. I couldn't pull the trigger!! Would it be impulsive to get it now? I guess I didn't expect to find "it" on the first trip out! Did anyone else have wedding gown anxiety when it was time to buy!?

It's beautiful but you're going to be cold. I think you hesitated for a reason.
  • About a year out is a good time to start looking (although you can certainly find a dress in a shorter amount of time) and it's not crazy to find a dress you love at the first shop you visit. But if you're not sure, then don't pull the trigger yet. Look at some more dresses. If you keep thinking of the first one you found, go back and see it again.

  • I would say take another trip out to look at dresses and then think about what you've seen and then you can decide. I hesitated on my dress as well but I ended up making the plunge after I thought about how sad I would be if I went back and that dress was gone.
  • If it was everything you wanted, why would you be planning changes already?

  • Take your time to think about it and I would recommend visiting a few more stores. Find out from the salon when you would need to order the first dress in order for it to be ready for your wedding. Make that your deadline for your decision. Don't go to too many stores because you don't want to overwhelm yourself, but I think one or two more might help reassure you that you found the right dress for you.

That is what a faux fur shrug or something similar is for.  And unless OP is insane and is having the entire wedding outside in the winter I doubt she will be outside long enough to be really cold.

OP, what custom changes were you going to do?  I don't get buying a dress and then making a lot of changes to it because that just tells me that you bought a dress that really wasn't what you wanted and are now trying to make it into the dress you had visualized.

You still have time to shop so I say keep this as the dress to beat and then keep looking.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone.. I'm getting my MOH up here to go with me for a more relaxed visit as opposed to VERY excited mom. The changes I want to make are just shortening the top fitted part, I'm short and I tried on another one in the same shape that hit me in a better spot, and the same designer has a belt with a little less beading on the sides that I liked better.. so not big changes at all, mostly fit. And yes Maggie0829, I will be getting a shrug for any dress I get for pics outside and ceremony and reception are inside.. I don't plan on getting a fleece lined dress so I'm not picking a dress based on "warmth" outside (that is for the accessories).. I also plan on wearing boots, not heels to my wedding :)

  • It's worth holding off, even if you come back to this dress. The very first dress I tried on, I fell in love with, it had everything on my checklist and was super cheap, and I was sure nothing else could compete. But then, yknow, each additional store I went to, I found something I liked just as well if not a little better. And then 3 stores later, I found the dress I actually bought, and I can't imagine going with dress #1 instead of the one I ended up with. Remember, unless the dress is being discontinued, you have plenty of time to order it later, but if you hesitated, it's better to keep shopping. You don't want to be thinking later 'Well, I stopped after only one store, what if there was something better??,' you want to be thinking 'I looked at a bunch of options but nothing could compare with this dress.'
  • It's very pretty but there's nothing wrong with doing some comparison shopping and checking out a few more dresses. I think some people do find the right dress right away, and that's awesome.

I tried on a JCrew Karlie ball gown (that I found on eBay for half price) along with some other dresses the first time I tried on wedding gowns. Because I liked that one the best of what I tried on I almost kept it, but I decided to keep looking. I'm glad I did.

The key for me was parting ways with what I thought I wanted and going with what actually looked good on my body.
