Should I do my own makeup??

Hi all!

I would love some advice. I have gotten two hair and make up trials from two different stylists. I haven't really been happy with either. I do my makeup everyday and think (at least my foundation) looks better than either of the artists did. Is it crazy to do my own for the big day?? Here are some pictures!

Re: Should I do my own makeup??

  • What color gown will you wear? If white, keep in mind that with this much of a smoky eye shadow up to your brow any auto light adjustment for photos will make your eye area look like big bruises. For this occasion end any deep color just above the crease on your eye. Light above that. Someone with nice clear skin should be able to do her own makeup, and you shape your brows nicely with just enough accent and have not overdone lip color or cheek color as many do.
One big plus of doing your own is one I appreciated at my wedding: you can take less than a five minute break 2 or 3 times between donning your gown and bedtime and wash off and redo, so you look fresh and any tears, tiredness, or open pores smeariness from a hot room or dancing can disappear and you will be instantly refreshed. Many brides pay a fortune, and early evening look bad and know it.

I would say, do your own.
  • I did not even think about being able to redo my makeup if needed during the reception. Great idea! Thank you so much for the advice!

I am doing my own makeup also. Everytime I have had it done by a professional, it has came out looking very different than I wanted, even when being specific. I want to look natural on my wedding so I plan on doing my regular makeup routine with a few little extras.

I agree about being able to redo anything before/after pictures! Do it yourself :)

  • I am thinking about doing the same! You are very pretty and I know this is off topic but I love your hair! I say if you are comfortable with the way you do your own, why not!?

  • I say go for it! I don't wear makeup daily so when I got my trial, DH freaked out that it was so heavy and not "me". He was right. Everyone insisted that I needed to cake it on in order for it to really show in pictures and this was absolutely not true. I did my own with just minimal bronzer and mascara and it looked perfect in photos. I look at pics of my SIL and her airbrush stuff looks way over the top, while mine just looks natural.

  • No, it's not crazy.  I did my own.  Well, technically, I did my own foundation the way I normally do. I partially did my own eye shadow, and my mom helped a little bit. (She is a Mary Kay consultant.)
  • I let pro do my make up but did my own hair because I didn't like my hair trials.

Just remember that sometimes the pros have better stuff--longer wearing foundation, lashes (if you can't do your own), etc.

I say it's worth having another trial.  I've had great luck with MAC artists.  Sometimes they look a little scary (wild color hair, huge tats, crazy piercings, ripped up fishnets at work) so I was initially intimidated and used to go to the Chanel counter or something more girly looking.  But those MAC girls always nail it.  Even if their eye shadow is neon purple, it doesn't mean they'll put it on you.  In both cities I've lived in, a MAC girl has given me her phone number because she has a licensed side business doing make up/hair/etc.  I've called the person, they've come to my house/event/etc. and done a great job on my make up.
  • Thank you all so much for the advice. I can finally get some sleep now :)
