Mini moon?

Has anyone ever done a mini honey moon after the wedding then took the big one the next year on your first anniversary? I just can't wrap my brain around trying to plan a honeymoon along with planning this wedding. Makes my head hurt. I was thinking of just doing a small getaway somewhere near by after the wedding but am also unsure where to do that at. I live in Pa. and am getting married in June. Also my fiancé only gets so much vacation time off so next year would probably work better anyways.  Just curious if any of you ladies have gone that route?

thanks!

Re: Mini moon?

  • A mini moon is a honeymoon. A honeymoon isn't termed by the duration you take or where you go. Its a vacation taken right after the wedding. The vacation you'd take later is just that. A vacation.

A lot of couples take their honeymoons later for whatever reason. Its nothing to lose sleep over :)

We did exactly this. H started a new job a few weeks before our wedding, so he hadn't accrued vacation time. We took a one-night mini-moon right after the wedding, and took our "real" honeymoon in our one year anniversary. I put"real" in quotes because for some, a mini-moon is a honeymoon. It's just as good. We just chose to celebrate twice ;)
  • We kind of had this.  We did a DW to Hawaii and spent about 5 days after the wedding there.  We were originally considering this our HM, but with friends and family there, it wasn't as relaxing as we'd wanted, and we decided that was still part of our wedding, so we planned a took a HM in the summer.  We got married in March, planned the HM in May and left in July/Aug.  You can always take a HM later and even plan it after you're married.

  • Many people do this for a variety of reasons- no big deal at all!
However, you said you couldn't imagine planning a wedding and a honeymoon. If planning seems stressful to you, just go see a travel agent and they will take care of everything. It doesn't cost you any money (they get commission from the airlines and hotels).

  • We plan on doing it, I don't think it has to be something big right after the wedding. We are going on a family trip in December to St Lucia and married in January so we will just stay two extra nights at the ski lodge we are getting married at after the wedding and do a vacation the following winter :) As long as you just enjoy each other you can do what you want!

  • Due to finances we didn't do as big of a Honeymoon as you see a lot of couples on this site doing. We live in Northeastern Ohio so we drove up to Niagara Falls & used a groupon for a wonderful room overlooking the falls. We stayed on the Canadian side, more to do there in for our interest. We walked along the falls, hit some wineries, had a little fun at the casino and also just relaxed. It was a great few days away nearby, only planning was booking the room and packing. We just what we felt like when we wanted to. It was awesome to have a few days to ourselves. The plan was to go on a bigger vacation on our 1 year anniversary, but we ended up doing some major home improvements so the money wasn't there. Someday we'll go on our bigger vacation, in the mean time, we're enjoying what the improvements have done to our home.
  • We just did a mini honeymoon/birthday moon in the Poconos. We're taking our "big" honeymoon to Hawaii next August.

  • We did it too. Due to a hurricane in the Caribbean the day of our wedding, our honeymoon was canceled. We used frequent flyer and hotel points to book a 3 night getaway in hurricane-free Arizona. The mini moon was so incredibly special because we were still riding the adrenaline from our wedding. We eventually rescheduled our honeymoon for six weeks later and it was wonderful too. I live in NJ and would suggest Cape May as a destination. It's lovely in June and has great restaurants and beach. Only thing is there might be 3-night minimums at the hotels over the weekend.

  • Thanks so much for all the replies!

I think we will go that route. Maybe come home Sunday/Monday after the wedding (getting married 3 hours away in hometown) recuperate then head off somewhere for a long weekend and worry about other plans later when funds have regenerated! weddings are expensive but I can't wait!

  • My fiance and I are planning exactly the same. Spending the wedding night at a hotel with a few days at home with no work just enjoying being married and then going on a fabulous cruise for our 1 year anniversary. All our money is going to the wedding and my fiance won't have enough time to take off work for a full vacation. We're happy to have something special to look forward to for our first anniversary. :)
