How far in advance to make bridal appt?

I was wondering how far in advance should I make my appointment with salons. I'm looking at a late April thru May time frame. I want to shop close to our hometown so it will be easier for family and friends to come with me. Should I start making appointments now?

  • Like this April/May? If so, you need to make these appointments NOW. And when you talk to the consultant, let them know the date of your wedding. Your selection may be limited due to the short amount of time.

If April/May 2016, I would probably start shopping in August/September.

  • I'm planning on shopping in April/May. My wedding date is Feb 2016.

  • I made my appointments approx 1 week to 1 month in advance of when I wanted to go to the store.

For super crazy stores (e.g. BHLDN), 1 month or more in advance is needed for a weekend appointment. Weekends book quick at other places though, so I'd recommend calling them a month ahead, or at least 2 weeks ahead of time, especially if your trying to coordinate going to more than 1 store in a day.

Weekdays are usually pretty easy to get appointments though.
  • Ok, thanks. I have to do a weekend since it's a 2 1/2 hour drive. I've thought about making appointments near me, but I would have to go by myself.

  • I made the appointments a couple weeks in advance. I think I called in very early January for appointments towards the end of January. I was able to get appointments at 3 shops on a Saturday (for 2 separate Saturdays, so 6 total shops!). Just make sure you're scheduling plenty of time. We did something like an 11am appointment and a 3pm appointment and a 4:30 appointment. Plenty of time to shop at the first place, then have lunch, then go to the second place, then just pop in the 3rd.

For me, the first appointment took by far the longest--that's when you figure out how everything works, and get an idea of what styles you like (and, in my case, realize that the style I was convinced I wanted was actually not at all the style I wanted).

Also, if you're going to a chain retailor (such as David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo), you should go prepared with style numbers that you like, especially is you're going on a Saturday. My DB appointment was terrible--they gave me a book and told me to look through it for the dresses I liked...I picked like 3 and then didn't carry any of them, and were unable to tell me if they just weren't out yet (i.e. was it a new season's book?) or if they just didn't have them in store. I ended up trying on a few dresses for the hell of it since I was there, but nothing I liked.
  • David's Bridal is a possibility. I'm looking at a small town shop, then another that is in a larger city. But that one is about an hour and a half away from the other. I may make an appt at the smaller one for one Saturday since it's really close to our hometown, then may do the city one another day since it's location is more central to everyone.

  • I'd do Sunday vs Saturday if you can.  Smaller shops might be closed on Sunday, I had that problem, but bigger places were less crowded for sure.

I'd also watch out for Prom appointments if any of the stores cater to those dresses too.  Prom is probably over by May but not sure on April?

  • Oh geez! I didn't even think about that. Do girls really make appointments for prom dresses? Boy, things have changed since I was in school. lol

  • Oh ok, I misunderstood and thought you were talking about your wedding date, not your appointment timeframe.

I scheduled mine 3 weeks in advance.

  • So I have time. Thanks.
With my first wedding, I was pg. So, I just went to a DB blowout sale and found whatever dress fit. lol
