Did you read the newest Pendergast?  I liked it a little better.  I liked that we got some insight into Constance this novel.  

I've been musing over the story arcs and I've decided what my issue really is.  In all the previous thrill novels, Pendergast was a side character, seen through all of their eyes.  So he was this mysterious Holmesian type figure that I was intrigued by.  Now that they're switching into his viewpoint, I'm not finding him as intriguing or mysterious because it's all being explained.  I still don't like that he's suddenly some sort of action hero with a gun, but again, that plays into my Holmes love that I thought he was somewhat like.  And I've obviously attributed characteristics to Pendergast that he doesn't actually have, thus my disappointment.

Sadly, I'm glad Alban is dead.  I really Really REALLY hated that trilogy.  I think I finally read the last book, but it was on e-reader b/c I didn't care.

    omg, i hated alban too! i thought "two graves" was pretty stupid.

    i definitely think "white fire" was better for the reasons you stated -- pendergast is better when he is not the main character. he also seems less real when we know more about him. it's not that i think he needs to be the sidekick, but i need to see less of him as the main character.

    the other issue is the same issue i have with a lot of superhero movies. look, in the end, you know that pendergast is going to save the day. so the thing you actually need is a really good villain. 
    if the guy that plays the joker sucks, it means that you don't really root for batman because it's not that hard to defeat a sucky joker.
    but if the joker is a really good joker, then you root for batman and hope he's as smart and clever and strong as joker.

    i am interested in seeing what other crazy relatives are in the family tree because i think there's a lot of good storylines there.

    Yeah, the villain in this one was...lacking.  He didn't get much structure or plot, so he's supposed to be so scary and 3 steps ahead of all of them, but he doesn't even show up as a name until you're more than 1/2 way through.

    Lately I feel like they're having plot structure issues and need a better editor.  B/c the entire first 1/4 was just not needed by the time you got to the real meat of the story and it took off and was great.  But, WTF did i just read all of that crap?  It barely brought what we needed to know it and surely 2 good writers could've done a better job of this.

    holla. there's too much mastabatory writing about pendergast's home. he has a nice house, architectural digest-worthy, we get it. get on with it.

    and there better be more about connie and her background.

    btw, i think sending her son to tibet was ... meh.

    Yeah, the Tibet just seems like some sort of holding spot until they figure out what they're going to do with that actual story line.  They keep sending these sons all over the place so maybe Tristan and Constance's son (blanking on his name) are going to team up somehow.

    I like that Constance finally had some damn personality and description besides, "her high collared dress with a touch of lace at her throat and wrists" and "smoothing her dress down".  Agreed that it needs to continue.
