Honeymoon vs. Spring break (Mexico)

Hi. We're considering a 4-5 day honeymoon in Mexico.  We would like to stay at an all inclusive hotel OR a beautiful boutique hotel.  Problem is, our wedding (and honeymoon plans) are during spring break!!  Does anyone have any advise on this?  Should we skip Cancun/Playa areas all together in late March? Should we stick to All inclusive resorts only? Are the towns and excursions bombarded with intoxicated 18-22 yr old co-eds or do they flock more toward places we (in our 40's) wouldn't be as interested in?
We just can't decide where to book our trip,  Spring break is the ONLY thing keeping me from a full hearted YES.
Thanks for any help :)

Re: Honeymoon vs. Spring break (Mexico)

  • Why not go somewhere other than Mexico that won't be quite as spring break-ish?  Or postpone your honeymoon by just a few weeks?  I postponed mine for just 3 weeks and it was the best wedding decision we made.
  • Mexico is just an OPTION at this point.  My question is for advice on the area during this time (to help us make our decision)  We are also considering waiting a few weeks (But with Mexico we'd have to wait til May since spring break runs through April as well)  Its just much easier for us to take all of our time off from work at one time.

We do have other places on the table.  I just wanted to know if anyone has any hands on experience with Mexico in March/April spring break time.
    Thanks : )
  • I try and avoid traveling pretty much anywhere during spring break or any time kids of any age are off from school.  You'd get less kids at an adults only resort (you'd only have college aged young adults) and if you chose a more expensive resort or a couples resort (like Sandals), you might not have many college aged people, so perhaps that's an option.  You can also check TripAdvisor and see what the reviews say around that time.
  • We went to Cancun for a wedding last April. We stayed at a nice all inclusive and we were actually kept up by VERY rowdy Brazilian students (a group of about 25). It was a family resort, so like Joan said a more expensive place like a Sandals might be better.

  • We went twice to Cancun over spring break (we are in our 30's-40's) and we couldn't even tell it was spring break. We stayed at The Royal Cancun (Hyatt Zilira) which is an adults only AI. Another option as posted above would be a couples only resort such as Sandals (we've been to the Grande St. Lucian twice *going back in 2016*, Negril once, Antigua once, Whitehouse once *going back this year), there's also Couples resorts and several other adults/couples only resorts throughout the Caribbean and Mexico.
  • I'd think if you choose an adults only or a bit higher end place in riviera Maya vs Cancun you should be ok. Some hotels also have spring break policies (age restrictions, groups etc) so you can look into that prior to booking. Also consider prices for airfare and hotels anywhere may be higher during that period. Spring break can span a few weeks depending on region so anywhere from early March to early April may be affected
  • Thank you everyone for your responses.  We're weighing every option.  :)   The more input the better and much much appreciated.  Thanks again!  :)

I'm a teacher so our honeymoon is falling during Spring Break - we are doing Mexico. Secrets Maroma Beach, to be exact. It's an adults only all-inclusive so we really aren't worried about spring break crowds. Sure, if we go in to PDC we might notice it, but it wasn't a factor for us. We knew flights could be more expensive, but we booked WAY in advance when we could afford what the price was, and so that also wasn't an issue.

  • I've never been to Mexico but I lived in the islands for years. Unlike Thanksgiving or Xmas,   spring break can go anywhere from Mid Feb (some schools are on week long breaks for president's day) until around Easter.   We never really had a specific week that was "spring break".   Some weeks during that time would be chill, others crazy.

I worked at a high end hotel and there were still a lot of kids (but not college age kids without parents - too expensive).     If you want to get away from younger kids go adult only.  If you want to get away from college age kids try a higher end hotel.   Although neither option is an absolute guarantee.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
