wedding cake blues!

I have a co worker at work who makes cakes..She said yes about making my cake but my mom feels that spending a 100.00 dollars on a cake mix wedding cake is a lil over priced..is she right or am i just being cheap?

Re: wedding cake blues!

  • $100 for a wedding cake is really inexpensive.

  • Most cakes cost $500 or more mostly way more. I would not think making a cake for $100 would be to much. Even if it is just box cakes. They still have to spend the time and money to do it especially if you are having them make a lot of cake.

Is she charging you to bake and decorate a full cake or is she mixing the cake mix for you?

For reference, I'm paying over $700 for a traditional cake that will feed about 80 and a groom's cake that will feed about 50 or so. So yeah $100 would be a steal if she's making the whole thing for you. I'd be really sure though that she knows how to do it properly before you enter into this deal. If you're on a tight budget, there's nothing wrong with getting  a sheet cake from a grocery store though.

  • My Fi and I looked at a few different places and the most expensive was almost $1,000 for a cake that would feed 90-100. The cheapest - an Italian bakery for $300 to feed 90 and no additional charges for sugar flowers, ribbon, etc. $100 is a steal no matter how you look at it but the cake isn't something you want to mess with..If you've never had her cake - even if she does boxed cake - I'd tread lightly. Don't forget how difficult they are to deliver. I don't think I'd trust just anyone to deliver my cake if it's a traditional tiered cake.

  • Make sure your venue will allow it, too. If your friend isn't a licensed baker, then your venue might not allow you to bring in their cake. Some venues only allow food to be served that is from licensed caterers/bakeries.

  • Generally, $100 for any wedding cake would be very inexpensive, but I need more information:

How many people is this cake serving? Is it a tiered cake? Has she made wedding cakes before? Is she decorating the cake or will it just be plain?
