GRRRR! (whiny)

I am so annoyed, I've been staying in this hotel room (for work) for the last couple of days, and I'm covered in bug bites!

This is literally the only hotel room in like 3 towns, so going somewhere else isn't an option. Waaahhh.

Anyone have any remedies for getting rid of the infernal itching?
TIA

  • Ughhhhh, that sucks!

Could you try Aveeno Oatmeal Bath? That usually helps whatever skin irritations I have.
  • Calamine lotion?

  • Like mosquito bites or bed bugs?

  • If they are bed bugs you need to take really quick action because those suckers will lay eggs on your clothes and hitchhike to your home. I would inform the front desk right away. Bed bugs are a big deal.

  • Thanks! I'll be letting them know when I get back to the hotel. How would I know the difference between bedbug bites and other insects?
  • Bed bug bites are usually clustered whereas a mosquito bite is usually singular and bigger. Bed bug bites will also appear most in the areas that are uncovered when you sleep, like your face and arms. If that's the case, tell management ASAP, wash your clothes in boiling hot water before you go home and put your luggage in the bath tub. It's slippery in there so once the bugs leave your suit case when they realize there's nothing to eat there, they will be stuck in the tub. The hot water kills them bed bugs, they like staying in clothing so they can continually eat you.

Our upstairs neighbor had bed bugs and they come to our place. Worst year of my entire life. It was a plague. They never go away. If it's bed bugs, take precautions mentioned above to make sure they don not come home with you.

  • Are the bites in a small grouping or straight line?  Because that is indicitive of bed bug bites.

  • H and I have a similar story as @BrandNewJ . Our upstairs neighbor got infested and they moved down through the walls into our place. It was the most traumatizing experience ever. I have never had anxiety as I did then. It took us a year and a half to get rid of them completely.

Here is what bed bug bites look like:

Do your bites look like any of these?

  • @sarawifenow‌ omg the anxiety attacks. Was got to move back in after a few months and it was too good to be true. We re did our carpet, ceiling, new couches, beds, just holy fuck. After moving the house back the bugs were back from upstairs. Had to re-move out again. I'm so so happy it's over!

  • @BrandNewJ--That is so aweful! I feel you. It is so embarrassing, too! I constantly felt dirty even though we are really clean regardless of the fact that bedbugs don't care if it is clean or dirty.

  • That sounds awful. I can't speak to the different types of bites but I find that a bit of hydrocortisone always helps. You can also by Benadryl in sticks that you can just rub on.

    I hope they heal fast!

  • @sarawifenow‌ seriously! Everything always felt dirty, even for months after they were gone. We'd always check under the bed. High fives for being done!

  • Thank you everyone! To answer your questions, they are mostly in groups, and the bites are large, like each bite is half inch to inch and a half. All bites are hard.

@BrandNewJ‌, is there a specific length of time to soak in hot water?

I think I'm going to replace my bag today and keep it in the bathtub, and maybe get a new set of clothes for tomorrow. ..

If it's bed bugs, washing your clothes in whatever temperature the hot water is on the machine will kill them. If it can't be washed, the dryer will kill them.

It might not be bed bugs, if it's not,I hope we didn't scare you too bad!

Either way though, if your getting any types of bites that are mainly coming from the room, the management should definitely do something about it.

  • Thanks again, I really appreciate the recommendations.

I know there's some in the clothes I'm wearing now, because I have at least double the bites that I had when I left the hotel :(
  • I talked to the front desk, and they moved me to a new room right away, and are dry cleaning all my clothes.  I picked up some benadryl cream and spray (spray is for when I'm in the truck at work), and really hoping it all works!

BTW, the front desk person said they have a family with a dog stay in that room each month.

Thanks again for the help, knotties!
  • This sucks!!  I'm glad the hotel is taking care of you in terms of clothing/cleaning etc.  But they sound like spider bites to me.  I grew up in a basement and occasionally woke up with groups of bites on my legs or back.  They were bigger (my Mom though they were mozzie bites, where the mozzies all bit me in the exact same place to make them bigger), similar to what you're describing and red and itchy too.

However, whatever they are, don't take any chances and make sure everything is cleaned before you go home.

  • Thanks! All of the clothes that had been in my duffel bag are being dry cleaned, and I cleaned what I had been wearing, as well as my coveralls.

I've never experienced this, so I'm not sure if this is possible, but could they be flea bites?

That's what I'm thinking now that OP mentioned a dog has been staying here.

Actually, that probably is the least likely scenario. Fleas are specialists, that is each species of flea feeds off of one specie of animal. So dog fleas do not generally bite humans. They do sometimes, but when that occurs it is one bite before it realizes it is not the preferred host and does not bite again. A bunch of dog fleas could have made this mistake, but probably not.

There are species of fleas that do feed off of humans. They just wouldn't have come from the dog.

Science dork is going back to lurking now.
  • Update: moved to new room last night, all clothes washed, and no new bites. The others are itchy enough though :(
