Is this a thing now?

DH has a friend that just had a baby. She and her husband hired a pro photographer to take pictures during labour and delivery. Thankfully they have only posted cleaned off baby, everything covered pictures on FB, but I have to wonder what kind of pictures the photographer got. Like, was she standing behind the OB clicking away?

Re: Is this a thing now?

  • She was probably standing in front in order to get the best view possible.

OMG I will murder someone if they take a picture of me in labor.

  • My friend has started offering this now. I don't know how many births she's photographed besides the first one but just... nooooooooo.

She's an EXCELLENT photographer, but I am all set on that forever.

  • Oh yeah, I know a handful of "lifestyle" photographers who offer delivery shoots. Not my cup o' tea.

  • My brother did this as a surprise for my SIL on kid 2.  She loved it.  But she posts everything on FB.  You couldn't pay me to do that

    lmfao basically.

The pictures my friend shared on her fb were just ones of the parents looking happy/content holding hands or holding the baby. Incidentally, the mother was also well-styled and looked nice in all of them.

I would not allow this because I look like an angry potato 90% of the time, so I can only imagine how much of a garbage bag I'd resemble the day I shot a child out of my snatch.

  • I wouldn't mind this. I'm not about to share the gooey photos on FB but I love the pics that I saw of the births of my children that were taken by DH and our doulas. You forget so much. I like looking back to those first moments.
  • It's a thing.  Photographers, videographers, social media hashtags for the birth.  I'm not entirely convinced that I'd like to stranger in there with me.  Luckily FI is pretty handy with a camera, so assuming he doesn't faint, there will be photos if we want them.  But maybe just the after pics.  Plus, FI is 6'8", so I'm assuming that any birth is likely to be cesarian, and I'm 99% people want to see that less than they do baby coming out naturally.

I certainly don't get the notion behind looking all glam the minute after you've delivered.  I think it's a sad reflection on the parents.  Sort of, "I care more about how I look at this minute and I do about the fact that I've just had a child."

  • I have a friend who did this as well. Just....ugh.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • This doesn't bother me so much as long as they keep the pics for themselves and don't post them all over the place. I wouldn't be comfortable having a stranger do that though. I have several photographer friends but I know they won't do those. They won't even do weddings so I'm so pretty sure births are out.
  • I wouldn't. I don't want anyone else in the delivery room besides H and the midwives.

Maybe I'll ask H to take a couple so I can look back later, but certainly none are going on FB until after everyone is cleaned up, covered up and looking somewhat presentable.

Today, I was on our work FB account and saw a video of someone's water birth. I don't know the person. It was edited so all you saw was her from the waist up (wearing a tank top) and breathing heavy and pushing and then her and her H kissing in the tub as she pushed. Then, you just see them pull te baby up from between her legs. It wasn't as gross as it could have been, but you could see the disgusting water in the tub. I know any kind of birth is not neat and tidy, but do you really want all sorts of people, many of whom you probably aren't close to, seeing you heaving and panting in a tub of brownish-yellow water? I know I don't.

Woman, I am at WORK, sitting next to the LEAST HUMOROUS PERSON IN THE WORLD.  Can you please contain yourself, because I certainly can't.  I just had the longest pseudo-cough attack in history.
