Do all platinum rings match?

The jeweler that made my engagement ring doesn't have the style wedding band I like, so I'm considering going to another jeweler to buy it. My only concern is whether the metals will match. I've heard that not all white gold matches, especially as it ages, but I'm not sure about platinum. I've read that platinum rings consist of 95% pure platinum and 5% "other metals," and that 5% makes me nervous. Who knows what "other metals" means!

Does anyone have experience with this? Is all platinum created equal?

Re: Do all platinum rings match?

  • I'm not an expert, but my rings are from two different stores, both platinum, and they match.

  • There are different alloys of platinum, ranging from 90-95% platinum and 5-10% of something else, usually iridium, which is a metal also in the platinum group. Any way you slice it, it's such a pure metal that there won't be a noticeable difference in color unless you've had your e-ring for long enough that the patina has begun to develop on it. In which case you'll just have to be patient and the same will happen to the band.

  • Mine are fine. We got my e-ring & wedding bands months apart and they were both part of the estate section (pawn) of the store that we went to. When the rings are both clean & polished you can't tell any difference in the metal. Right now the wedding band looks nice but that is due to a recent repair done on the ring so it was polished more recently then the e-ring. But it won't be long before they look exactley the same again.

So that being said, if the wedding band that you love is available at a different store, go for it!!!
