More TMI!

Last time I posted a TMI/ BC thread there was quite a bit of discussion about IUDs so I thought I would follow up.  Because all of you are obviously on the edge of your seats about my plan to not get pregnant for the next year, right?  You mean NO?  Well, I'm going to tell you anyway.

I got my IUD yesterday and it was way less terrible than I heard it might be!  I had read a lot of horror stories on TK and online in general so I was pretty nervous, but it actually was not so bad.  The procedure took about five minutes and it hurt quite a lot while she was doing it, but it was over quickly.  For about 20 minutes after the procedure I felt kind of shaky and nauseous, so I called Fi to come "pick me up."  Read: walk to the doctor's office 15 minutes from our house, and ride in the taxi back home with me, because I was afraid I might puke and I didn't want to be alone in a taxi for that.  Did I mention he's the best?  He's the best.

I took a Midol and got in bed with the heating pad, the dog, and one of the cats and slept for a couple of hours.  We had a big family party to attend that night in Brooklyn (and no, not downtown, it took literally an hour on the subway, ugh) so I was kinda grumpy about getting dressed up and going into the world.  I basically felt like the worst period cramps I ever had.  But I danced a little at the party, and took some more Midol before bed, and I was basically fine.  I still feel slightly crampy, but nothing at all like I was afraid of.  So I wanted to share a counterbalance to some of the IUD terribles I had read.  I think the experience must just be different for everybody.

And now a funny Fi story.  At this family party, there were several adorable children in various stages of baby-to-toddlerdom.  Fi spent a big chunk of the party holding this adorable baby in, I kid you not, a cable sweater onesie.  The cutest thing I've ever seen.  Fi said at least three times throughout the night, "Make me one!  Let's have one!  If you get pregnant in a couple months you won't even show in your dress."

Cue the death stare. "Of all days for you to tell me this, today is really not the day."

This is like an episode of men saying stupid things (if such a show existed). One time, fine, but three! Does he not realize your appointment was so you do not get pregnant in the next few years.

  •  "Make me one! "

This part has me dying. Does he think your vag is like an easy bake oven, where he has no involvement in the creation process but enjoys the tasty goodies coming out?

DH scared me on Friday with the idea of starting TTC by the fall. As of tonight, we're in agreement- give it a year to get physically in better shape, and financially in a better spot (we've got savings, but I want a minimum of 3 months of my salary saved and set aside for expenses for when I'm on maternity leave), along with having a better idea of where we want to move to/spend a good chunk of our lives going forward.
  • I'm glad it went well! Swat your FI upside the head for me.

  • Happy to oblige!!

Have to report, evil Chipmunk came out at work this week....paralegal asked where the heck a certain type of report came from. In front of senior supervisor attorney, I said "well, when an excel book and the data love each other very much, they share a special hug...." and that's as far as I got before being whapped with the note pad. The attorney and the paralegal were both falling out of their chairs :D
  • Yay! I'm glad it worked out for you! But please don't be me and make sure you can always find the strings... I've been in agony for three months and no doc can tell me why. Latest idea is the IUD even tho ultrasound looks fine.. Trust your body and you'll be good! I'll hope you don't get any periods on it! That was a wicked bonus :)
  • Glad everything went well! This is making me way less nervous about getting one after the wedding. What kind do you have?

  • Glad it wasn't too bad. Mine sucked, so glad you're not going through that. I can never find my strings by the way

@blabla89 I got the Mirena.  This is only Day Two so I have no feedback on it other than the insertion, which is probably more based on the skill of your doctor than the actual product.  I'm really hoping for no periods eventually!

  • Glad it worked out! My experience with both my IUDs was similar - uncomfortable but not terrible.

OMG my Fi is the same way. He always jokes that IF/when I want to have a baby I just have to give him some wine. He even jokes about it when wine drunk, lol.

FI has more baby fever sober than anyone I've ever met. Like for real. It's absolutely adorable. Although when it first popped up it took me completely by surprise.

That onesie is absolutely hideous. I'm sure the baby one was adorable but grownups should not wear cable sweater onesies.

  • Pretty similar to my Mirena experience.  Had the shaky spins right after, but then was fine but crampy.  I just had a period for about two months straight after.  :(  But then at the two month mark, it disappeared and hasn't come back!

    As for the baby thing...

Something about the city where we live.  When you drive through the hood, there are a zillion gas stations or shacks with "Steak and Lemonade."  That's all it says on the sign.  I'm fascinated for whatever weird reason, but they're usually places on my commute that I don't stop.  I just keep driving.  H and I are in the car, we stop at a light, and I'm looking at the "Steak and Lemonade" sign.  I'm hoping he takes hint, offers to go in and buy a sandwich and lemonade to go while I wait in guard the car.  Finally I say "I could really go for a sandwich."  Simultaneously, he says "Madeline.  That's the perfect baby girl's name.  Madeline."

Baby is not in the cards now.  My clock isn't ticking, I'd like to continue being an exec and playing sports and drinking endless wine.  We've been over this many times.  But apparently, we're not on the same page because we're not in the same book in the same universe.
  • I have Mirena too! I'm thinking of getting mine taken out though, as it kind of pokes DH when we...*ahem*, which is a little uncomfortable. Plus there have been a couple of times where it gets a little jostled and gives me MAJOR pains.

No periods is great, but I think having a few days of bleeding now and again are fine for me. Plus I don't like that since the hormones are more centralized that it doesn't affect my acne (in a positive way like oral pills did!).

Ask your gyno to cut the strings shorter.  That's what pokes him.  They leave them, often in a little loop, so they can tell if it's moved at check ups.  But also so you can reach up and make sure it's still there.  If you're having this issue, they cut them really short.  Harder/impossible for you to check it but happier him.
  • i have mirena too. FI hates it because of strings but loves the no periods as do i. i go in feb 5th for my yearly. the placement sucked. i wish my FI went with me would have made it easier. made my sister and dad come get me because he was already working (semi cant pull into lot to get me)

i stopped immediatley and spotted but woke up with pain some nights. it finally calmed down until June when i had what felt like my period or heavy spotting then gone by July and i have had it for over a year now.

as for his comment id be aggravated. FI will bring up kids then realize where we are now we dont have room for another one (read step son and 2 bedroom house)

Same as above--ask about getting them cut shorter.

My gyno also said they get softer over time.  When they first put it in, they're like wires.  They get more bendy after awhile.  But I'd still get them clipped.
