Chit Chat

We witnessed an accident last night.

Yesterday morning, all the roads in my area were a sheet of ice. There were dozens of accidents all over the place. They actually shut down the NYS Thruway and the Palisades. We had a baby shower in the city, and by the time we left at 1:30 the roads were open and they seemed just wet. But they had put out warnings to expect the roads to refreeze at night. On top of that, it was pouring all day and a lot of roads had standing water.

So, we're driving back home on the Palisades, which is a 2 lane parkway, and the speed limit is 50. We're in the left hand lane, and there's a good amount of cars on the road. We had just passed a gas station, and there was a small shoulder on the left for people merging in from the gas station.

Some guy was driving like an ass, trying to speed and weave in and out of traffic. I don't know if he thought the merging lane/shoulder was another lane, or if he thought he had enough room to try to get around us and the car in front of us. He came flying past us in the merging lane (probably at 70 mph) and lost control of his car within seconds. He hydroplaned and skidded all over the road. H slowed down, so thankfully we weren't in his line of fire. He hit the guardrail 3 times and came within inches of slamming into the car in front of us. He ended up on the grassy shoulder, but since it was still icy, it took him a long time to slow down. Thank god he didn't hit any other cars.

It totally freaked me out. How is getting to your destination 5 minutes earlier worth risking your life and the lives of others on the road? Especially after all accidents that happened earlier in the day!

  • Definitely not worth it. I'm so glad you and your H are okay!

  • We get assholes like this in Houston, and it seems like they all come out when it rains.  The heavier the rain, the bigger proportion of asshole drivers.  It's almost like bad weather is asshole bait or something.  I also love how they will ride your bumper in the right lane as well.  Dude, go around me.  I call them my future patients.

I'm glad y'all weren't hit and that others won't either.
  • I don't know what it is, but for some reason the bad weather brings out the stupidness in other drivers.
Be cautious and give yourself time to get to your destination.
Last snow storm we got I was driving to work and I witnessed someone purposely run through a red light.  Seriously? The roads are not that bad that you "accidentally" slid through it.  Then there were a bunch of dicks driving in the middle of the fucking 2 lane road going 10 MPH in a 55 zone.
I end up with serious road rage every time we have a storm now.

Glad that you guys are OK.  I'm in the Southern Tier and I don't think we are going to be getting any of it except some light flurries.

  • I was just having a similar discussion with my boss. I really can't stand people who drive like that. We all have places to be, but we also have people who care about us and want to see us arrive safely. Have respect for other lives.

I passed an awful accident Saturday as they were cutting the top off of the second car involved. I saw too much and broke into tears. I hope all parties survived, but I fear not.

Glad you're OK! I hope that driver is OK also and learned something.

  • I hope he learned his lesson too. He was driving like a total dickhead before he crashed.

I also saw someone purposely run a red light this morning, again when we had the threat of the roads being icy. This person was actually stopped at a light and had a red arrow. And they just turned left. It made me so pissed. Why do people drive like this!!? You can easily kill someone with your car.
  • They closed the bridges to Brooklyn and New Hersey yesterday also because of the ice. There were numerous accidents by me also, including a 15 car pile up.

I'm glad that you and your H are okay!

  • I'm sure when the car came to a stop he felt like an absolute moron. Sounds like he got the kharma he deserved!

  • I'm glad yall, or any other cars for that matter, weren't involve!

Last week we had ice here and there were about 15 accidents within in 45 miles on the interstate going in one direction. All because people didn't want to leave their house a few minutes earlier to get to work.

  • We saw some similar ass hattery yesterday.   Luckily we're in SE CT so we just had rain that was colder than a witches t!t but the other areas of the state were reporting some major problems.

This allowed DH to talk about his favorite thing: cars and the proper tires.   So let this be a word of warning to you: if you don't have snow tires, you should!   A car will stop faster on ice than it will in regular all seasons.   Consumer Reports reported that one car could take TWICE as long to stop in all seasons as it will in quality snow tires.

    The more you know...
  • On Saturday I was driving home on surface streets and there was a car that was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic.  At red lights he would floor it and squeal his tires as soon as the light turned green. I stayed back and kept my distance from him. Luckily it was good weather though.  But, it was one of those days where I seemed to catch every red light the whole way home. And every time I pulled up to a red light his stupid ass was sitting there stuck at the same light!  So he was driving like an idiot and it wasn't saving him any time at all!  I was laughing the whole way home.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

OMG really?! I think if that happened to me I'd walk to the nearest 7-11 and play the lottery!
  • Accidents are so scary to watch. I was once driving and I saw this guy who'd been run over while riding his bike. Just lying in the middle of the road, a bunch of people crowding around him. I didn't see him get hit but it was obvious it had just occurred. Luckily I found out later that he was okay (I checked all news sources obsessively for the next few days), but it really made the rest of the drive difficult emotionally. I kept feeling like I should have done something but it was clear other people were calling 911 and I'm sure I would have just gotten in the way on the narrow road.

I'm glad you guys are okay. Things like this are why I'm not sure I want to move back to places where it snows.

  • Do you ever feel like out of body or something when you witness things like that?  A couple years ago we had spotty ice on the highway, and I heard a horn, then this lady came flying past, sliding, and smacked into a car 2 lanes over.  It was like, "did that really just happen?" - not like scared or relieved, just kind of surreal or something.
