Italy vs Caribbean honeymoon?

My fiance and I are debating whether to go to an all inclusive resort in the Caribbean or a tour of Italy. Could anyone give us some insight/advice? Traveling from Philadelphia.
Thanks!!!

Re: Italy vs Caribbean honeymoon?

  • They are WAAAY different. What do you want out of your trip? What is your budget?

  • Also, what time of year would you be going?
  • Are you looking to lay back and relax or sightsee? Because those are two different - though not mutually exclusive - things. However, those two specific honeymoon types do tend to epitomize one or the other.

  • Those really are such different trips.

My husband is really not someone that can lay on a beach for a week, so we decided on Italy. We went for 10 days and had an amazing time. Lots of sightseeing, walking, eating and drinking.
  • We don't have a budget as of now, but not trying to break the bank. We're leaning towards the relaxing part of the carribean, but we're not set in stone yet. We're going in July out of Philadelphia, so we know flights will be pricey as well.
  • Just as an FYI - July in Italy can be miserably hot, especially in cities in the southern half of the country (though I lived in the north near Bologna and there were still days when leaving the house to do anything was a huge pain). That being said, if you're looking to go somewhere that at least gets a sea breeze (Cinque Terre, etc.), that would help a bit - you would also want to make sure the hotel you use has good air conditioning (not all of them do in Italy).

Truth.  I went to Italy in early August and it was SO hot!  I had a great time, but I also almost passed out one time because of the heat.

I recommend setting a real budget first. There are so many different definitions of "breaking the bank". I often spend tens of thousands of dollars on vacations each year, with a lot of them being over $10K. So, "budget" for me is different than someone else.

  • Those are two very different types of trips and two very different budgets are probably needed.  Also, a longer trip is most likely necessary for Italy as opposed to the Caribbean.

So you need to consider what type of vacation you want and how much you can spend.  Those two answers will probably make your choice easy.

This is actually very helpful! So we're going for the caribbean/jamaica. Budget of about $5,000

  • Agreed with other posters..Italy will be hellishly hot in July and very very crowded.  If you want to go to Italy, I would recommend going in the fall.  It doesn't really get "cold" under late November.  Also, if you do end up going on the tour of Italy, I would recommend going to Cinque Terre in addition to some of the larger cities.  It is absolutly beautiful!
