Food help

Since I know you lovely ladies give the best food suggestions I need help. FI's band is playing a show at the end of Feb. and he has another band going up from SOCal to play. Apparently most of the time the food provided is lunch meat and bread if they are lucky so he wants to go above and beyond and provide a full homemade dinner. By that he means he wants me to go above and beyond and make a full dinner.

We live less than 10 minutes from the venue so in theory if I pull it out of the oven right before we leave it will still be hot when we get there. Any suggestions for something that can be made in bulk and travels well? I think both bands plus any SO's who may be back stage should be around 20 people.

Re: Food help

  • Will they have time to sit down and eat it, or is it better to have something they can kind of pick at?

  • I would make a pan of lasagna. You can get one of those pans with a lid and wrap it towels to insulate it during the 10 min. drive. One pan = easy

If you're really feeling awesome, you could make a simple caesar salad for a side dish. One bowl plus a thing of dressing.

  • Things like lasagna and other casseroles normally do well. You could also do some form of pasta and then make sauce/ meatballs in the crockpot. Other than those I ont have any other ideas. Hope that helps the brainstorming a little bit

  • Lasagna or baked ziti and salad
  • I agree with PPs - baked ziti and lasagna travel very well. Meatballs and chili in a crockpot also do very well.

  • I just had to pack up food for 11 to take to a game night. I made meatballs, 5 cheese ziti, mostaccioli with Italian turkey sausage, and salad. Everything traveled across town ~10 minutes really well and they were all big hits.

If you want something that doesn't require knife and fork, maybe pulled pork or shredded chicken BBQ or sloppy Joe sandwiches. Otherwise you could make up a big batch of taco meat and provide different shells and tortilla chips and toppings. Chili or beef stew would be really good too with some Jiffy corn bread.

They usually have a ridiculous amount of time between showing up and actually going on. So there is plenty of time to  sit down and eat.

  • This is going to sound weird but can you find out if the members and spouses eat meat? When I was in high school, my friend's dad owned an Italian restaurant. I used to help him cater a huge music festival each year (like 2 days, 50 bands) and I was shocked to see how many musicians and artists are vegetarian. We would bring 2 times the amount of eggplant parm rather than chicken.

That's a good point. I know all of our guys and their SO's eat meat, hell I could probably just fry 20 pounds of bacon and they would be stoked. I will have FI check with the other band, and now I kinda like the idea of eggplant and chicken parm.

  • I second the idea for pulled pork and a side dish. Super easy to travel and make. Tends to be a crowd pleaser too!
  • If they're doing a show, will they want to eat something heavy like pasta though? I think maybe doing something filling, but lighter, may be good. I do think that sandwich stuff is a great idea, veggies and dip, fruit, etc. I mean, if they're nervous, having a huge stomach full of baked ziti isn't exactly going to help!

You could do french dip sandwiches and make the filling in the crock pot. Or meatball sandwiches.
  • I like the lasagna/baked ziti with salad suggestions. Definitely a crowd pleaser. Another dish to consider would be Doritos taco salad (tastes best cool/cold) or anything in a crockpot since that will keep the food warm.
  • Am I the only one who hates baked ziti with a burning passion? I'd much rather have chicken in some sort of sauce with rice pilaf or buttered noodles.

  • I don't like baked ziti either. Like one of the PPs said in a little leery of pasta right before playing.

  • I'm not a fan of ziti.

I keep thinking that something customizable would be good. For instance, bring a big tray of roasted veggies, a crockpot of meatballs, a big pot of hot marinara sauce, rolls or bread, and lots of shredded cheese. Maybe a tray of some sort of pasta and a salad as well. This way, people who want something lighter before going on stage can have veggies and sauce/cheese/etc. while the people who are starving can have a heartier meal. Plus, even if it cools down, it's an awesome assortment to snack on once they're off stage.
