Tuesday morning vent

- DH finally went to the doctor and he does have a fractured rib.  He is in so much pain, Poor boy.

- we had a date night in Aspen last night.  Started out great.  Went to a meat and cheese place for drinks and apps with a guy who worked for DH in the summer.  Then we went to a dive bar for another drink with them.  Then we went to a highly recommend Italian  restaurant.  To say it sucked was putting it mildly.   There was no favor on anything.  It's like they have no seasonings in the kitchen.   My steak was not cook properly, DH had bad potatoes on his dish.   His pasta fagioli was something I've never seen before.  No pasta, no tomato, no garlic  They put it down and we both thought it was a mistake.  Speaking of garlic.  I have never been to an Italian place that didn't use garlic.   Not one dish had garlic.  It was weird.      It just sucked to spend that kind of money on crappy food.

- I woke up with a slight hangover.

How is your day?

Re: Tuesday morning vent

  • Ugh, that all sounds so crappy. I don't think I have ever had bad Italian food, and I would NOT be happy if I did. Poor DH, what does he have to do in order for his rib to heal?

I had a 9AM meeting this morning. What kind of creature scheduled a 9AM meeting on the day after a long holiday weekend? And someone is doing construction somewhere on this floor, or building, and the sound of the drill is driving me insane. I'm ready for this day to be over with.

  • Back to work today after the 3-day weekend.  Blech.

This was NOT my weekend in regards to car stuff.  Saturday we went to go run errands and one tire was almost flat (new tires I just bought in October).  FI aired it up and we went to go wash my car.  After we pulled out, there was a horrible grinding sound and the car shuddered...that happened twice, but then hasn't done it since.  Very strange.

Sunday the tire was low again so we took it back to the tire shop - I'd picked up nail somewhere.  Luckily I bought the flat repair package so it was a no-charge repair.  I decided to clean out the inside of the car, and had to back it up to the garage because the ShopVac cord is super-short.  No worries, except when I went to back it into the garage, I hooked the opening and snapped my front bumper off halfway. I was ticked and went in to tell FI - luckily we were able to snap it back in place.  I had an appt at the dealer yesterday anyway for some recall work, and they double-checked to make sure the bumper is secure and won't go flying off down the highway.

    Cars suck.

  • The doctor told him to use heat pads, move around and gave him some painkillers (which he hasn't picked up yet).

  • Broken ribs are the worst. Nothing feels good.

House hunting sucks. Mortgage process sucks. I want it all to be over with.

The oil and gas industry sucks.

With the price of oil plummeting, of course a lot of western Canada jobs are in jeopardy. While FI isn't directly working for Oil and Gas, his company's main clients are members of the industry. FI flies guys in and out of the remote camps.

When we moved north, our goal was to get FI to 3000 hours (Pilot's experience isnt based on years, its based on hours flown). We had estimated based on his schedule that this would take us about a year and a half. Once he reached the 3000 mark, we could put in a transfer to Calgary and move down without taking a significant paycut. And then be back around our families.

However now that the price of oil is way down, all the companies are trying to cut costs elsewhere. So bye bye to chartering flights. This week is the last week FI is doing his biggest flight, which is an overnight flight which usually nets him 11 hours of flight time. It was the flight we were banking on to quickly drive up his hours. Next week there will only be 2, 3 hour flights a week out of our base. that need to be split between 3 captains. So FI may only average 2 flights a month.

So at that rate, with 200 hours left to accumulate, our goal of moving home this fall is not going to happen. Sadness.

TL;DR: Oil Price Plummeting, causing FI's average amount of flights a week to drop, causing our 1.5 year plan to look more like a 3 year plan.

  • FI shocked me this weekend, we were sitting down and talking about the marriage license (for some reason he's chafing at the delay of getting me into the DEERs system to get my military ID and stuff), and he said we should "just have the judge sign off on the marriage license when we're there picking it up".  Um - what?  No!  He's concerned that I won't be able to make any decisions for him because it won't be "official" until we get the certified copy back.  I don't know why that makes any difference, I can't make decisions for him now.  It's only another 3 months until the wedding, and besides, I actually want to get married ON our wedding day.

I'm so sorry that's happening to you. FI and I are in industries not affected strongly by oil (insurance and accounting) and we'll be pretty isolated from the effects, but I do feel so badly for people like you guys who ARE affected by it. It's going to be a tough 2015 for a lot of people here.

  • Ugh god, there's a restaurant that leans heavily toward italian food in the next town over from me. FI's parents LOVE it and we have birthday meals there fairly often.

Their alfredo sauce is milk with a couple shakes of that kraft parmesan powder cheese, I swear to god. The pizza is gross. Their red sauce barely has tomatoes in it and is like over-acidic ketchup.

I just want to go into their kitchen and smack whoever did their recipes.

Thanks! Yea it sucks. But we're trying to think positively. As long as they don't lay him off, he's on salary so he will still be getting paid even though he will just be sitting on his butt playing video games all week.

And thankfully we came to northern BC to save money for a house and wedding. So we are in a good spot financially, and will continue to be able to save a lot of money (as long as he doesn't get laid off). I know there are a lot of people who are worse off who have insane mortgages and toys to pay off who will be hurting. We at least have a tiny little rental and no debt and are merely stock piling our earnings to save for the future.

I just was really looking forward to moving home to alberta this year! I miss Edmonton! I am an Alberta girl through and through.

DH kept breathing in  my face saying "smell my breath, smell my breath, does it smell like I just had Italian food?"

DH doesn't complain about food often to chefs or management.   He gets people have different interpretations of dishes. The only time he complains is if it's rotten fish (he can smell it before he even tastes it).   If he doesn't like something he just doesn't go back.

Last night he couldn't help himself.  There was a nice note in the front of the menu giving the history of the chef including working for a 2-and 3 Michelin star chefs.      As some of you know he is an exec chef.  He is also an Italian boy from Long Island.  He grew up with mom, grandmas, aunts, uncles making Italian food from scratch.   Expectations were high.

His grandma made the best pasta fagioli.  He even told the waitress how if he sees pasta fagioli on the menu he always has to order it because it reminds him of her.   The dish that was put down was very dark and the consistency of paste.  It didn't even look appetizing

  • I hope your H will be okay :( My heart would break into a million pieces if I had to see mine in so much pain! And that Italian restaurant sounds so crappy! It's always a downer when you go somewhere so highly recommended and it's really just not up to the standards! I hope tomorrow will be a better day for you both.

FI always comes into the kitchen to comment about how good the food smells as soon as I put the garlic in the pan. Sometimes as soon as I've finished cutting the garlic. Literally haven't cooked anything at all but just have garlic OUT IN THE OPEN.

Garlic is fucking IMPORTANT and anyone who ignores that life-affirming taste pillar is not my kind of person.

  • My sister is allergic to garlic, so we didn't use a lot growing up.   Now I like it in small doses.   I'm not a fan of big chunks of garlic, but I like to be able to taste it.

  • I make a chicken dish that I often throw three HEADS of garlic into, so I'm definitely on board the garlic train too. I have also been known to roast a head of garlic and then just sit there with a fork and eat it clove by clove.

Good thing FI loves garlic too because I can't imagine breathing on someone who didn't, haha.

    I need a xanax.

    Anniversary
  • I agreed to go to coffee with a friend AND a pub night with my writing buddies tonight. Feeling slightly guilty about abandoning DH and spending so much money on drinks. On the other hand, friendship! I rarely get out of the house, and rarely spend time with anybody I don't know from college, so this will be good for me.

  • Bad Italian food makes me sad.

DH's semester started today so he's in class 3 nights/week going forward. It's kinda nice having the house to myself but I hate that I have to drive to work instead of taking the train.

I ran late this morning and was going to treat myself to some stupidly expensive coffee drink along the way. I waited in line before realizing I forgot my wallet. This also means that I can't stop for last-minute groceries on my way home tonight.

    Blah.

  • Now I'm smelling garlic. I am going to make FI cook Saturday, and I'm going to tell him it's all y'all's fault.

I've had a headache all day. It's that kind that's just barely there, enough to hurt but not enough to take something for. I have a hangnail that keeps getting hung, and keeps getting a little bit more painful each time I catch it on something. It's sunshiny AND warm outside for the first time in a month, and I want to be outside in it. I don't want to be working. I want to be making little crocheted bunny rabbits in a rocker in a sunshine patch.

I need some cheese to go with my whine.

  • Nothing out of the ordinary to vent about today, but I have a garlic story.

When I was 11 or 12, I decided to make my mom a surprise dinner for Mother's Day- garlic bread and garlic chicken lasagna. The whole recipe required 40 cloves of garlic. My dad took me to the grocery store to buy ingredients, and he didn't say anything when I put 40 HEADS of garlic into the cart.

On Mother's Day afternoon, my dad took my mom to go do something so I could cook. I started peeling garlic for the recipe. By the 15th head of garlic or so, I started feeling like it was a lot of garlic going into this recipe. I finally called my grandma and asked her, "Is a clove of garlic the whole big thing or the little tiny things inside?"

By that point, I had already put the lasagna in the oven with a shit ton of garlic. My mom came home and laughed when I told her that happen. We all ate the meal, and it wasn't too bad, but my mom still teases me to this day.
