Sending out invites more than 10 weeks out?

I was reading in another post that it is rude to send them more than 10 weeks out. Could you please explain to me why? My wedding is a destination wedding and the hotel blocks out some rooms, but not enough for everyone. So, in my mind I'd rather send them out early so we can book more rooms if needed. (But I guess I did just send out my save the dates and that has the website information so if there are any other crazy planners like me they can just book their rooms now. )

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Sending out invites more than 10 weeks out?

  • No event needs to have invites sent out more then 2 months ahead of time.  That is plenty of time for your guests to decide if they can make it and respond accordingly.  And since you sent STDs they have the date, location and are able to look on your website for more information if they want/need to.

Also if you send out invites more then 2 months out there is a chance that your guests could easily misplace or put them off to the side because they figure "hey, I have like 2 months to RSVP so I will do it later."  Then they will forget about it which will leave you calling a lot of people asking about their RSVPs.

Finally, in regards to booking the hotel, having a room block is very nice of you but if a person does not book quickly enough to get into the room block then that is on them.  They will just have to book at a regular rate or at another nearby hotel.  A room block is a nice thing to do but it is not your responsibility to make sure everyone has a room/books a room.  Travel reservations are the guests responsiblity.

You just answered your own question.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Thank you. That explains it perfectly. Now I just have to figure out how to mark this as "answered" :)
