passport pain

Has anyone left their passport in their maiden name? I was hoping to change mine but I dont have any identification in my married name. I don't drive and am thinking $120 is a lot to pay just for a peice of id for a 5 year passport.
To renew I need
2 photos
Birth certificate
Current passport to support identity
Marriage certificate
Document to support new name.

I don't have the last one. Am gutted.

What would you ladies do? Leave the passport in your maiden name or pay for a licence you may never use?

Re: passport pain

  • Do you have a bill that you have changed your name on like a cable or phone bill? A bank statement would work too.

Shit. Your licenses are expensive. Mine was like $25.

I'd get a non-driver ID card. Most states (and, I'd assume, other countries) offer them, and it's better to carry around than your passport for day-to-day ID.

ETF your paragraphs. Why do the boxes do THAT?

  • My passport is good for 10 years and an ID card here is only like $22. :/
  • I wouldn't be comfortable traveling on a passport that didn't match my legal name beyond a honeymoon.
  • I'll ring city hall to ask if there are non driver id cards or tge like. I'm just worried my home country won't accept it. I'm living in Belfast but am applying for a canadian passport. Maiden name is 2 step process :(

I'm not either. Just finding through research today I have limited and expensive options. Fingers crossed there is an Id card offered somewhere. Literally every bill etc has changed to my married name except my passport as it's valid until July.

Wouldn't this be proof of your new name?

  • Also I emailed the canadian passport office and asked if the id I had would suffice. They copied and pasted a big confusing paragraph from.the website. When I asked what exactly they would accept, they emailed me the contact numbers for the London and Dublin consulates...

  • You live in a different country, I don't think $120 is a lot of money to be able to travel without issues around the world.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I would think so but I'm wary to send it in and have it declined. Hopefully I'll have a firm answer tomorrow.

I'd call the consulate then, and explain your situation. I mean, it's complicated, and I'd definitely want to get it changed, but it sounds like a more complex situation than what most people go through.

The most annoying pain about my passport is that my picture sucks and the year period to change the info on it without having to completely renew expires about a month or so before my name changes.

  • Call and ask exactly what supporting document they need. Typically, both US and Canadian passports only require the documents you listed above- picture ID, marriage license, previous/ current passport, birth certificate, and whatever name change request you submitted when you changed your name. Supporting documents are typically only asked for when one of the above is missing.
Or am I missing something? Did you already legally change your name?
  • Document supporting name change was my social security card, here in the US. I cannot be of more assistance.. Try what others suggested - non drivers license ID or try utility bills with your new name on it.

  • Are you not able to use your existing passport as proof of ID and citizenship and submit an application along with a copy of your marriage certificate? This guidance makes it seem like that's all you need (CLICK). I'd call and verify. The items you listed seem like what it takes to get a passport in the first place, not a passport reissued in a different surname.

Either way, I would imagine an ID would come in handy in more ways than just a passport renewal and might be something you'd want to have for emergencies if nothing else. I would strongly advise using a legally valid name to travel internationally to avoid incident.

You are spot on. I've changed my name on household accounts and bank accounts. Passport was the last to change.

When I rang both consulates. There was long option board, every option seemed to direct me to thr website and then it wouldn't give me the option to speak to someone, just cut out. Will try again today. The emailing seemed to be quickest but wasn't getting any answers.

I wI'll definitely look at getting a non-driving id card!

Looking at the options today, you are totally right. Especially because I don't live at home anymore. I don't think I liked the option yesterday because I didn't like yesterday overall :(

  • If you're canadian, we have 10 year passports now. Its WELL worth it IMO.
