Help - Suit or Tux?

We are getting married in July on a location right on the Delaware River.  The space is both elegant and rustic at the same time.  I'm having a hard time deciding if my fiance and his groomsmen should wear tuxes or suits.

What have you all done?  Any advice and ideas would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Re: Help - Suit or Tux?

  • Well what does your FI want to wear?  What do his GM prefer?  This is something that should be left up to him.

What time is your ceremony?  Typically tuxes aren't supposed to be worn until after 6pm but if your ceremony starts in the late afternoon, early evening (like 4:30 or so) then wearing a tux is fine since your event will go into the evening/night anyways.  And really wearing a tux before 6pm is a victimless crime so if your FI is dead set on wearing one then okay.

Something to consider is that renting a tux could be about the same if not more then having all the guys buy a suit.  And really every guy could benefit from having a dark colored suit in their closet.  So budgets are something else that you need to think about.  And if your FI wants to wear, say a black suit, you could always just tell the rest of the GMs to wear any black suit that they own but then pick a specific tie color/pocket square color.

  • Unless your wedding is truly a black tie affair, you can't go wrong with a suit.

Plus, if you have the GMs wear suits, they can get one for approx the same cost as renting a tux AND they get to re-wear it for interviews, other weddings, funerals, work, etc.

  • Suit. Can buy one for similar price to renting or maybe even use what they own To be honest when I looked at 2 rental shops the "tux" that I liked at both were basically suits with a satin lapel so they call it a tux. That further made sense to do suits
  • I think it really depends on what you, your fiance, and the GM prefer and the price differential. Some PPs say that renting a tux is about the same price as buying a suit. Our experience was different - the tux rental cost was $200, which was much less expensive than buying a nice suit. Since we preferred a less formal look, we went with grey tuxes.

  • My FI does not care in the slightest what he wears.  He is very laid back when it comes to the entire wedding planning.  Our ceremony is at 6:30pm.

Thank you all for your help.  I think we are leaning towards suits.  We are heading out this weekend to do some shopping!

Our GMs got their suits at Macy's. Every now and then, Macy's has major suit sales. Plus you can use coupons you get in the mail/Sunday paper. I think they got $600 suits for about $225. Something like that.

  • I let my husband pick out his own attire.
  • We are having a rustic theme in Colorado this April. We decided on suits, mainly because renting a tux and NOT getting to keep it is so silly to me, especially when you can buy a full suit for just a little more. The groomsmen all really liked the idea of suits over renting a tux too. I let my FI pick out the look he wanted and we just went to Men's Wearhouse and showed them the look we were going for
  • I think wearing a nice suit at his wedding will be so much nicer than wearing a rented tuxedo that might have already be worn by a dozen teenage prom goers.  A suit is elegant, and buying one is so much more practical than renting a tuxedo.  Did you know that tuxedos weren't even allowed at weddings until the 1950's?
