Facials

I've never had one before, so I need you ladies to fill me in. I found a deal for an hour-long Dermalogica or Eminence Organics facial at a local spa that has good reviews and I'm debating whether to buy.

So this may be a dumb question but...what does a facial actually do, what does it help with? I have fucking gigantic pores and some icky blackheads on my nose and chin that I can never quite get rid of - will a facial help with that? Is there anything else I need to know?

Re: Facials

  • It sounds like we have similar skin. I've been to a couple different places for facials and it never made a huge difference. I felt like they just slathered things on and off and that was it. However, my MIL swears by them and loves it. I think a lot depends on how does and it how good they are.
  • I have gotten a couple and granted, I have super sensitive skin, but my face is always bright red for a whole day. It feels raw almost. But then once that goes away, AHHH, beautiful skin.

The one I did used a microdermabrasion to get the dead skin off, a oil/moisture treatment, and lots of eye cream.

  • I have similar skin problems to you OP: larger pores and never-ending blackheads on certain parts of my face. I get a facial about 4x a year (more or less once a season). Depending on what type of facial that you get, they will do something called an "extraction", which is basically removing everything in any white/black head on your face. However, before they do this, at least with the one that I get, they steam you face and actually open up your pores. If anything, I noticed that my pores feel larger than usual in the immediate days after a facial.

The positive thing is that all black heads are completely gone. The negative thing is that they usually return within a few weeks. It really is a never-ending problem :(. If you have never had one before though, I would definitely recommend trying it out. Each person will have their own reaction to it!

  • I bought a 3 visit groupon to a place with good reviews.  I'd never had one before but wanted to try it out.  Mine did lots of moisturizing and steaming and some sort of extractions (I get these weird bumps on my cheeks and around my eyes) which apparently she really liked doing (little creepy).  My face was red for hours and hours afterward so I was glad I did it at the end of the day.  For my 3rd and final visit she had to reschedule bc of an emergency and I never ended up rescheduling it because I didn't love the first 2 and didn't feel like it really did anything for me. I don't see me getting one any more either
  • What a facial does depends on what kind you have done. Maybe call the spa, tell them your skin concerns, and see which type of facial they would recommend.

I get something called a Fitness Facial every few months and I LOVE IT. They message your face/scalp, shoulders, neck, hands and arms, so you feel super un-tense and relaxed. They put hot towels on your face and chest (best feeling ever). Then they do a mini peel so it's not super harsh. That sits on for a few minutes with a hot towel and then gets taken off. Then they message some anti-oxidant heavy moisturizer stuff into your face.

When I leave, my skin looks super glow-y and feels very moisturized and good, the dead skin is gone cuz of the peel, and the message gets blood circulating (thus the glow-y look). When I walked into our house from my last facial, FI looked at me and said "What did you do? Your skin looks really good." So the fact that there was enough of a visible difference for him to notice says a lot. The peel also helps get rid of some minor acne scars (red spots) I have, and the overall experience leaves me feeling really really relaxed and happy.

  • I love facials.  The quality does really depend on the spa though.  My favorite spa offers an anti-oxidant organic facial which my skin loves.  They start off by cleansing the skin, then the put the steamer over your face, extractions follow, and they finish up with a mask and moisturizer.  Last time I also got a mini peel.  Each step (minus the extractions and steamer) you get a facial massage while they apply the product.  Mine also massages my shoulders, decolletage, neck, and arms.  Afterwards my skin may or may not be red (depends on how sensitive it is that day), but when I wake up in the morning my skin looks great.

I'm the same as you.  Right after, not so good.  The next day, amazing!
  • I've only had 2 facials, and both times I had nasty breakouts after. I have pretty good skin (At least I've been told that), and I rarely break out. I only break out if I eat too much chocolate, or around my period, and that's not that much. I think the facials were maybe too rough for my skin, or they dried it out too much.

I know other people though, my best friend for example, who love getting facials and they have had great results on them.

  • I'm glad you started this thread. I've always wanted to get a facial too. They seem to be very realxing. I'm planning on putting that on my gift list. Then again anything like that, I love doing. I hope I get the same feeling as I do when I get a haircut. I think you should call ahead and tell them what your problems are. They should know the best one.
