So, this past year (2014 going into this year) I've really been getting into makeup. I find myself spending a lot of time watching stylist tutorials, browsing around in Sephora & if I'm bored at home, I'm often in my bathroom mirror trying to perfect my "winged eyeliner" method.

I'd like to say I'm getting pretty good at the whole makeup thing & I'm planning on doing my own for my wedding.

I work at an automotive plant, so I don't really get to "dress up", so I try to keep my makeup pretty low key during the week, but I really like to go all out on the weekends or for special events.

I'd love to hear y'all's makeup methods & what products you use!
Here's a list of what my products & methods are as of late :)

Moisturizer: Mary Kay "Timewise Age Fighting Moisturizer" - I have dry-ish skin. This moisturizer is lightweight & not too greasy. It keeps my face moisturized without looking shiny. I get lots of crap from mom & FI bc I'm only 24 years old and use "age fighting" lotion, hah! Kind of pricey ($29, I think), but worth it.

Face Primer: ELF Mineral Infused Face Primer - Love this stuff. It's really good at smoothing my skin & keeping my makeup long lasting. And it's CHEAP ($6)!

Liquid Foundation: Bare Minerals "BareSkin" in "Bare Shell" - This is my favorite liquid foundation to date. I've tried a lot, but this one takes the cake. I have been blessed with fairly good skin (minimal blemishes, no dark spots, in between dry & oily) & this is a pretty lightweight foundation. It's not quite full coverage, but it really gets the job done with evening out my skin tone & covering whatever small blemishes I have. It's $29 a bottle, so it's not super cheap, but one bottle did end up lasting me about 3 months.

Highlighter: Sephora Microsmoothed Baked Luminizer in "Stardust" - This is my "I can't afford the Becca shimmering skin perfector, so I have to settle for this" luminizer. I usually highlight the bridge of my nose, under my eyes a little, the top of my brow bone, & that little part of your face under your nose that meets the "cupid's bow" of your lips. I like this because it's shimmery without being glittery. It's a good product for the price ($12-$14), but I'm saving up to either buy the Becca or the Urban Decay highlighter.

Pressed Powder: Rimmel "Stay Matte" Pressed Powder in "Transparent" - This isn't really a necessary part of my routine, but I usually use it to blend my highlighter & give my skin a more "airbrushed" look. I don't contour yet, because I haven't quite gotten the hang of it. Anyway, it's a good pressed powder that creates a matte look (I use an ELF kabuiki brush to apply), and it's fairly inexpensive ($6-$8).

Blush: ELF Studio Blush in "Tickled Pink" - Another ELF product (I love them). I use this as an alternative to the Nars "Orgasm" shade. It kind of takes a lot to show up on your face, but for the price ($3) it's definitely worth using a little more.

Eyebrow Pencil: Sephora Retractable Brow Pencil in "Honey Blonde" - Ugh. The eyebrows. I still cannot master the perfect shape. Also, it was really difficult to find a shade that wasn't too dark, but wasn't so light that you couldn't even see it. I like this pencil but I really need a stencil for my goofy ass eyebrows (they're super thin, so I have to draw in a lot). I wanted (REALLY wanted) to get an Anastasia of Beverly Hills pencil, but good lord in heaven they are expensive. The Sephora brand is only $14 I think. This is a good alternative though. I can't quite get the hang of the gels & the powders either - so I have to stick with the pencils for now.

Eye Primer: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in "Original" - Goes on extremely smooth & keeps my eye makeup looking fresh all day, even after working for 10 hours in a plant all day (plus, NO CREASING!). I buy the smaller size bc I'm a cheap ass, and I don't use it *every* day (I think it's $15 for the small tube).

Eyeshadow: Urban Decay "NAKED" 1, 2, & 3 Pallets - My favorite freaking eyeshadows of all time. I have all 3 pallets and use them all pretty equally (though here recently, I've been using the 3 more often than the others, I really like the pink shades). The Naked pallets are $54 each, I think. Now that I have all 3 of these, the next pallets on my wish list are the Smashbox "Full Exposure" pallet & the Kat Von D "Monarch" pallet.

Liquid Eyeliner: Kat Von D "Tattoo Liner" - SO GOOD. I told my mom the other day "If I ever try to buy a different kind of liquid eyeliner, please stop me." because this shit is the best. It goes on so smooth & precise, and it stays on ALL day. Like I said earlier, I'm still perfecting the "winged" eye look, but I'm getting there. Price is kind of high ($19), but it lasts for a long time. My last tube lasted me about 4-5 months.

Mascara
: Tarte "Lights, Camera, Lashes" OR Benefit Cosmetics "They're Real!" - I have both of these but I really prefer the Tarte. I have long eyelashes already, but this really lengthens & curls my natural lashes. I've never had a problem with clumping or flaking with either of these products. They last a long time and are well worth the price ($20-$24).

Lipstick/gloss: NARS Sheer Lipstick in "Fast Ride", NARS Semi Matte Lipstick in "Red Lizard", BITE High Pigment Pencil in "Meritage" - Okay these are my 3 favorites. "Fast Ride" is a GREAT darker berry shade (which I look pretty good in, if I do say so myself). It's my all time favorite lipstick. It' sheer, so it goes on more like a balm and feels fantastic on my lips. It's pretty long lasting too. My go to red is the "Red Lizard", it's semi matte, so I usually put on a coat of clear chapstick before applying, it makes it much easier to apply & feels better on my lips. The "Meritage" is my go to "nude" color. It is a lighter shade of pink that really compliments my skin tone. It has a very smooth application as well, and is pretty long lasting. Nars is pretty steep when it comes to their lipsticks ($26 for the sheer & semi matte), and the Bite is around the same ($24), but they are all DEFINITELY worth the money.

SO, there's my makeup essentials & routine.
What are yours?!

ETA: Added moisturizer & cost of a few things.
ETAx2: LIPSTICKS, duh.

Hang with me, girl. I've been filling in my eyebrows for 15 years. Like an idiot in high school I plucked them all out thinking it was cool, and they've never grown in the same. Thin and uneven. Sadly it's the only makeup I can do well. I have the sephora pencil too and I'd stick with that. Nothing other than a pencil stays on quite the same, and that tip is blunt enough to keep what you draw on looking more natural.

  • Yay makeup! Those sound like really good products! I don't know the names for all of mine off the top of my head.

I start with Aveeno daily moisture cream. My skin is kinda dry in the mornings. Its not too pricy and it works well, plus it doesn't make me oily at all. I've had that problem before.

I use Almay line smoothing foundation. Its light but has coverage. Plus it has SPF so that's a good thing for me.

I either use bare minerals powder or cover girl. I use it to make sure my face doesn't get too oily and its light too.

I use clinique blush for the same reasons as the powder. Plus I'm pale so I need it to look alive ha.

My mom gave me this eye shadow makeup kit by Elizabeth Arden. It has a lot of colors I like so I have a lot of options.

Finally I either use Elizabeth Arden Blue Midnight eye liner or Black Plum by Estee Lauder. I have hazel eyes so those really make them pop. Both are penicel, I never liked liquid ones. They were too runny for me.

I'm doing my own wedding make-up too and I recently spent a LONG time in Sephora picking out a few new things.

My favorite-- though it's not a make-up product-- is a glycolic acid facial cleanser by Dermadoctor called Wrinkle Revenge 1. It gets off all the dead skin and has been getting rid of old acne scars, so it leaves to "perfect foundation for make-up application" lol. (I read the brochure). But I've only been using it a couple weeks and I really really love it. So much.

Face Primer: A DD cream also by Dermadoctor. It's awesome on its own but also great as a primer and somehow it's the only one I've ever used that doesn't make me break out.

Liquid Foundation: Just bought a new one at Sephora from a brand I hadn't heard of before and I can't remember the name of it. Sorry. But it has awesome coverage and looks natural so I'm a fan.

    Highlighter: The one from Benefit

    Pressed Powder: don't use one

Blush: Forgot the brand of this one too (sorry again!) but it's a cream blush that you blend in with your fingers and it's a good color. It's easy to do just a tiny bit so it looks totally subtle and natural, but it's also easy to add more.

Eyebrow Pencil: Probably Cover Girl or something. I need to get a different one that's water proof for the wedding. I use a charcoal gray so it's not too harsh.

Eye Primer: Same as yours! Urban Decay Primer Potion. I've been using it for years and I love it.

Eyeshadow: Urban Decay Naked 2 palette

Liquid Eyeliner: I think technically it's a cream liner, and it's kind of like a pen, by Benefit. I'm not too happy with it just because the application is kind of annoying and I don't have as much control over it as I'd like. I was using a drugstore brand cream liner pot but it tends to wear off throughout the day and smear easily. I'm gonna try out the Kat Von Dee kind you mentioned!

    Mascara
: I usually don't wear any because it makes my eyelashes dry out and then they shed more than normal. Sometimes I use an organic one, but I'm so used to just not wearing any that it has become normal for me. For my wedding, though, I'm gonna invest in something good and also apply a few individual lashes, I think.

I don't really wear much make-up. I work in clinical research and I never see/talk to people; just sit at my desk in my awesome solitude. So all I really wear to work is a little eye liner and some concealer if I need it. But I love testing out my wedding make-up whenever we go out somewhere special. I've always liked playing with make-up. It's just fun :)

    ETA: Brow powder: Urban Decay.
    Brow pencil: drugstore brand
Make-up setting spray: Urban Decay De-slick
    Bronzer: Urban Decay Dallas
    Brow/eye highlighter: Benefit Highbrow

ETA (again): it Cosmetics under-eye concealer and moisturizer

  • Oh my lord, this list could get super long. I have insane amounts of makeup and I'm planning to get my esthetician / makeup artist license later this year. Here are the things I've been using lately:

    Stila One Step Correct
    Smashbox Photo Finish primer
    Nyx under eye concealer
A variety of foundations -- I'm transitioning from Hard Candy Just Face It foundation
Hard Candy glamoflauge concealer that I use as a concealer on blemishes and as a highlighter since it's a little bit lighter than my skin tone.
Benefit High Beam for more highlighting
Physician's Formula Powder Palette blush in Blushing Mocha for contouring
Urban Decay Naked 2 palette a ton, but also a wide variety of MAC shadows and the UD Electric palette. Tons of random other Nyx, Ulta, and drugstore-brand eyeshadows.
    ELF liquid liner
Maybelline Expert Eyes brow pencil w/ Anastasia tinted brow gel
Smashbox Full Exposure or Benefit They're Real mascara
    Kat Von D blush
Basically every lipstick on earth. Lately I've been super obsessed with the Nyx Wicked Lippies and Anastastia liquid lipsticks

That's the short list of what I've been using the past couple of weeks, anyway, haha. My "makeup table" is the top of a dresser and the top drawer of said dresser is filled with makeup.

I dont wear makeup as much as I used to. Ever since I got my IUD my skin has been going crazy, so I've tried to lay off the makeup. Most days now I dont wear any! But I still have my favourites:

    Smashbox primer

I dont have a favourite foundation right now. I used to use bare minerals powder, which I want to get back into. Right now I have a liquid foundation, the revlon photo ready which I dont love. Its got a weird shimmer in it, but whatever, it works.

Favourite concealer, and I will die if i ever have to get something else - Lise watier Portfolio Correction Concealer. Its a round wheelie deal, and I just love it.

I have some random eyebrow pencil which I dont love. I'm a strawberry blonde, but this pencil is too red. I dont want my eyebrows to look so reddish, so I struggle to find a nice colour.

Blush, again, random. I dont feel it important to spend too much on blush, as long as you get a proper tone. I am using a bare minerals one that is quite heavily pigmented, but I just use a touch. I dont remember the name.

Eye shadows - I have 2 palettes that I mainly use, one is a sephora brand for blue eyes, and the other isa large tarte travel palette. I really like the tarte one, as I find the shadows are nicely pigmented and they give a good variety of neutrals.

Mascara - I love clinique. Pretty much any clinique haha. I don't like drugstore mascara, even the ones people swear by. My lashes are long, blonde and the individual hairs are quite thin. So they cannot hold alot of product, and get cakey/spidery looking quite easily. I need a thin formula that I can build, rather than a thicker one where you only need one coat.

I dont really use eyeshadow primer, lipstick, lip pencils or pressed powders. I don't have a favourite eyeliner right now, I am just using up the rest of a dark brown pencil I have.

I love Sephora but I'm pretty boring with my makeup. I wear Urban Decay foundation, eyeliner, and I have the Naked 3 palette for shadow. Mascara, I used to be obsessed with Diorshow but I got a free sample of the Benefit "They're Real!" a while ago and it's just as good for me and cheaper, so I've been all over that lately too. I like Stila eye pencils and shadows too, a lot.

For special occasions I wear the Makeup Forever HD setting powder and the All-Nighter setting spray from Urban Decay too. I have Urban Decay primer too but I don't wear it often.

I never put anything on my lips because I hate the shape of them and don't like to draw any attention to them.

(ETA: I don't wear blush either - I'm very white with quite a bit of flush in my face naturally so I avoid it for fear of looking clownlike. Once in a blue moon I highlight and contour with some Benefit stuff.)

I alternate between Korres rose scrub and the blue stuff from Bliss for cleanser, and other than that I pretty much leave my skin alone. I don't have issues with it so I try not to mess with it much.

  • I need the helps with makeup.

Face powder...foundation I guess: Neutrogena. The um, loose powder that is the second lightest shade...or maybe the third lightest.

    Mascara: Maybeline...whatever.

Eye shadow: One urban decay pallet, other random things. Lots of purples.

Lip Stuff: I like reds.. I have some smashbox stuff. It's not too bad.

That's it! I want to wear make up like a grown up but I don't know what any of this other stuff is or how to use it or where to buy it!!! My mother is a lovely woman but wears minimal make up and this is what she taught me. Hell I had to tell her about lip stains.

  • @teddygirl9 - Are you using the old formula of Photo Ready or the new Airbrush one? I've heard the Airbrush one is terrible and the shimmer is even worse than the original. The original is supposed to be a good dupe for the Makeup Forever HD foundation I like but don't want to spend $40 on, so I was bummed they changed it.

Also I have darker ginger eyebrows and the Anastasia tinted brow gel in Caramel is a good match that isn't too red.
  • I use almost entirely Mary Kay. I really like all their stuff, and my mom is a consultant so I get a discount (and got it all free when I first started wearing makeup as a teen)

I am using CoverGirl foundation right now, the kind you can get at Walmart, because I haven't ordered more MK stuff. As soon as it's out I'm ordering more MK. It has way better coverage than the CG stuff.

I've also thought about getting a Naked palette because practically everyone I know loves them so much.

My routine is MK time wise skin care. Foundation, concealer. MK's cream eye shadow and eyeliner. Occasionally mascara. I used to do blush but haven't in several years since I ran out. Lipstick one in awhile when going out, and again, I use MK.
  • I need the helps with makeup.

What kinda help? What are you looking for? What kind of products do you want to play with? Do you like bright colors or more neutrals?

I'm a sucker for red lipstick. My favorites right now are both matte, so if you want shiny this definitely won't be it, but I love Nyx "Alabama" and Anastasia Beverly Hills "Bloodline."
  • @esstee33 for the foundation? I have no idea. It's a few months old now, I think I got it in the summer. I dont notice the shimmer once it's on my face, but in the bottle its so weird!

Where did you buy the brow gel from?

It's probably the new airbrush kind, then. I think the new one is a mousse vs the old liquid one. I've heard that both of them are super shimmery, though. Also that they smell terrible haha.

Ulta or Sephora should have the brow gel. Some "prestige" Macy's stores may have it. Or you can just order it on Anastasia Beverly Hills' website, but I'd go into the store and check out the color first for sure.

Face Primer: I'm not this hardcore at makeup.

    Liquid Foundation
: Almay "Clear Complection Makeup" - This one is for oily skin and in an ivory shade.  It's alright, I guess, and doesn't make me break out any more than I already do.

Concealer: The Body Shop's All-in-One Concealer in "00".  I guess this is good?  I really don't know, it is like this stick thing that I try to use to hide breakouts, basically, and my dark under-eyes (me and everyone in my family has them).

HighlighterThis is that white powder that you use to Carmindize your face/eyes, right?  If so, I use Rimmel London Glam Eyes in "100 Glam Ice".

Pressed Powder: I don't even know what the point of that is?

Blush: Marcelle Velvety Powder Blush in "Dust" - I'm not a fan of this one.

Eyebrow Pencil: *cues Jennamarbles "You can wear makeup on your eyebrows?" gif, I couldn't find one but there ya go*    Sigh, I have Rimmel London's Professional Eyebrow Pencil in "001 Dark Brown", and I can't use it worth a shit.  I am not good at this whole make up thing.

    Eye Primer: No.

EyeshadowRimmel Specisl Eyes in "181 Passion" is decent, it's like a violet sort of thing.  Then there is my Almay Intense i-color Powder Shadow "trio for blues 202", and it is alright, probably more bold than is in style now.  I also have a couple other multi-pack ones that have looked horrid but I wore out anyways because I was on a time frame and didn't want to wash off my eyes and start over.  Those ones are Rimmel London "026" and L.A. Colors Glittering Starlet Eyeshadow in "GP82 Elizabeth".

    Liquid EyelinerAgain, no.

Regular Eyeliner: Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in "Taupe", and I have not once gotten it to work.  Friggin' eyeliner.

    Mascara
Covergirl's Lash Blast Volume in "black-brown" is just meh.  I think I need a new one with a smaller brush.  I saw someone with jaw dropping eyelashes once, and I got up the courage to ask them what mascara they use, and they said the green and pink one (I know what she is referring to, and I had had that kind before and it was also meh).  I bet she had eyelash extensions or something, like I have long-ish lashes but hers were long and even and all bent the right way (you know that torture device thing to curl your eyelashes?  Well, I feel like I do one set of eye lashes good and then I go do the other one and it looks different and weird).

I lust after their lip colors, but after all the shady business practices and drama I just can't bring myself to buy their products.

  • Have you guys heard about lip sticker things or temporary tattoo lip things?  This is what I mean http://www.violentlips.com/collections/all     http://lh6.ggpht.com/-EI4W4netiEo/UKJp-qfxYXI/AAAAAAAAIRg/8c2FKmC4NOw/IMG_3091_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800
Not anything I would normally wear, but the rainbow ones might be fun for Pride, however, I was wondering if they'd work or just look horrible and be a waste of money?  Like, you move your lips to talk and smile, not to mention you eat and drink stuff.  Anyone try them?

  • @esstee33 I kind of just need to know...what to do? I feel like I'm missing steps. I look exactly the same with make up as I do without, or at least I think so.

I get some red undertones in my skin, and I've got forever pink cheeks. I want to cover this stuff up. Not to mention dark-ish circles under my eyes.

I can't get eyeliner to do things. Like...line my eyes. I seriously cannot get pencil eyeliner to go on my eye lid, it just...nothing is there. At all. And liquid eyeliner makes me nervous.

We bought those for our houseboat crowd's gift bags one year and they were fun. Kind of finnicky to put on but they stayed on pretty well through drinking and talking. They're kind of flexible like temporary tattoos. They feel weird though, and they do look pretty bizarre.

I won't recommend different things because that will take too long for my patience and so I will share some tips. I also didn't read anything so if I am literally dropping this post and running. Lol, sorry.

Heat your eyelash curler with a blow dryer. It helps the curl stay longer. Test the thing out on your wrist before putting it on your eye!

You don't need as much foundation as you think. Less is more. I hate seeing the holy shit cakey face people think is acceptable. I use a stick concealer and a finishing powder. That's it. I have good skin because I'm not filling my pores with bullshit and maybe genetics. If you let your skin breath it will reward you. Plus all that foundation really makes your flaws stand out.

Spread whatever foundation/bronze/whatever down your neck. You can tell when you don't, because your face is a new color than your neck.

For lipstick, put a coat on, kiss a napkin or tissue a few times and then put a second coat on. It should help stain your lips so when it wears off you don't look like a crazy person with the line around your lips.

For lipliner, fill in your lips with it. Don't just line. You won't get the gross liner look when your lipstick wears off.

Best contouring tutorial I've ever seen

2 coats of mascara. ONLY!!!! You don't need that much, oh my god.

For fake lashes, trim them down to make them look more natural. Let the glue dry a lot before sticking it on.

Eyeliner mousse is seriously the most amazing way to line your eyes. I don't know why, but nobody ever wants to use it. You can get the thinnest, most perfect lines! I hate pencils. I only use them for tightlineing.

You sound like me with the foundation + pink cheeks and things, so I probably can't help much. I've been trying a variety of foundations with different primers and color-correcting products to see which combo of makeup voodoo actually helps conceal my redness without covering my freckles. The Smashbox green primer helped immensely with the redness, though. If you go to Sephora they'll give you a sample of it to try! While you're there, you can ask them to help match you in a foundation that evens out your skintone. Or go to a MAC counter and tell them the same thing. Sephora is awesome for foundation shopping just because of the sheer number of options. MAC is great because they have a whole range of shades in either warm or cool and they'll help you figure out which your skin is. The great thing about MAC, too, is that once you figure out your shade, you can Google it to find a ton of other foundations that should match you if you want to try a bunch.

The Nyx undereye concealer (CLICK) I've been using is the JAM for dark circles, though.

The pencil eyeliner just doesn't go on your eyelid at all? Or are you applying a super thin line and not really noticing it? If it's not showing up at all, try holding it in a flame for just a second or two, then letting it cool. It'll make it more like a gel liner that will go on soooo much more smoothly.

Honestly, the best thing to do is just to watch tutorials until you can't stand it anymore, and just keep fucking around with it. Constantly. Do weird shit just to see what happens and how it looks on your face. You'll get a really good understanding of what works and what doesn't for your face -- like, if you have more hooded eyelids, you have to do your eyeliner differently so it's more visible. But there's tutorials for it all over the place, too. Jaclyn Hill does some really good tutorials, especially for more "safe" or neutral looks (CLICK). My favorite is Batalash Beauty, but they do some craaaazy things so that's a next-level kinda thang (CLICK)

Oh shoot apparently it's called gel but when I started buying it I'm pretty sure it was called mousse. Anyway, it's like thicker and waterproof. It goes on really easy and I always have an easier time with a brush. This is what I use, because I find that 90% of the time drugstore makeup is the same as luxury makeup. I love the brush, the pigment and it literally will last all day and through my sleep if I don't take it off. Shit's really good.

And that's another tip- most expensive makeup is literally the same as drugstore. Try the drugstore out first and see what it does for you and compare it to a sample of the luxury makeup.

    Re: the bolded
IF you can figure out what the dupe is. Even if it's the same formula, the color may be slightly different. Or if the color is the same, the formula or application might be slightly different. And with lipsticks / eyeshadows, the color might just actually be so unique it doesn't really have a dupe (ie - Lime Crime Cashmere).

Usually if you Google the high-end makeup you're into and "dupe," you'll get something, though.
  • That's why I kept saying most. I love my urban decay eyeshadow for the pigmentation but I found that ELF, which is like the cheapest shit ever, has really amazing pigments as well.

I'll buy my drugstore makeup and spend the rest on books
