How do I pick the best dress for my body type?

How do I pick the best dress for my body type when I don't fit any of the typical structures? I am only five feet tall, I'm heavy chested (36ddd), sort of broad shouldered, and wear a size 8 in pants. I'm not interested in wearing a mumu (sp) inspired dress which seems to be the answer for anyone who has a mixed body type. Any suggestions would be helpful.

My suggestion would be just to find a salon and go and try things on. Call ahead of time and share your concerns, and the staff should be able to help you out. A good store will be able to help you out, even if the dress has to be heavily clipped so that you can see what it will look like.

Keep in mind that you may need buy a dress that needs heavy alteration in order to be able to accommodate your bust. A good seamstress should be able to fit the rest of the dress to you very well, maintaing the original shape, or creating one that you find flattering, even if it's ten inches too large in places. Hopefully some of the ladies here who are great at sewing (I actually have no idea whether any of them are professionals or not, but I got a ton of great advice on alterations I wanted made to my dress) can weigh in, and tell you things to look for, or avoid, in a dress that may need to be taken in a lot.

Also, you might get away with trying a tea length dress and save on hemming; it depends on the manufacturer.
