Tuxedo shirt color - will white make my dress look drab?

I am wearing casablanca 1985 in champagne (although it looks like an ivory to everyone who has seen it.) Bridesmaids are in black full length gowns. Tuxedos will be black, do I need to insist on a ivory shirt for the tuxes? I really like the look of the white shirt - especially on the groom who will be wearing a graphite vest/bow tie,  but the tux people are saying this will make my dress look darker and drab when I stand next to him.

No and most of his shirt will be covered my his jacket.

ETA: My dress is a Casablanca ivory/champagne gown and DH wore a white shirt with his black tux.  It looked fine and you really couldn't notice a color difference.  Also, your dress is champagne so it won't look like the colors are supposed to be the same.  Here's a picture for reference.

  • Some grooms actually look better in an ivory.  I had DH wear ivory because he looked better in ivory.
  • Yeah, the tux people like to push ivory.  In theory, I think ivory is kind of weird.  At least, it used to look more yellow and much more "ivory" than any ivory dress I've ever seen.   In practice, I can't honestly say that I've seen an ivory shirt in the last decade, or if I did, I didn't notice it.

CGMr has a pic in her signature of her daughter wearing an ivory dress and the groom in a suit with a white shirt.  It looks fine :-)

  • I fully agree-- ivory does look dingy in pictures next to white
  • I wouldn't worry about this at all.  I'm wearing Casablanca champagne as well and my honey's shirt will be white.  Won't look odd, in fact, I did not like the ivory shirt option we saw.

  • My dress salesperson told me the same thing, my dress is a light cream color.  When we looked at the ivory tuxedo shirt - ugh, it was borderline yellow.  Just awful.  I think we'll "risk" it with the white, I'm sure it will look just fine..

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Tuxedo shirt color - will white make my dress look drab? : Here it is.  I think ivory shirts look dirty next to a black tuxedo or suit.

It's far more important that the individual person looks good than to have shades of a color match between two or more people.  Remember this is an adult event, not high school homecoming or prom.  Adults should dress to flatter their own coloring.
