Where to Begin!! Help!!

My Fiance and I have decided to have a Destination wedding in March of 2016. We are considering Mexico or the Dominican Republic. I have no idea where to begin when it comes to planning!! We would like to keep it affordable as possible for us and our guests.

Where do I begin?! Help please!

Re: Where to Begin!! Help!!

  • I would suggest touching base with a local travel agent, after you figure out what your budget range for guests are! They will work wonders for you. There's not a ton right now you can do, as airlines do not post prices until 330 days prior to departure. Right now, I would just try to figure out your budget, and check out resorts you like!

The travel agent we are working with was able to provide us a rough estimate of prices including airfare for Riviera Maya, and also some resorts that would be in our budget. This made us rethink our destination.  We'll be able to start fully working with our agent for our February 2016 wedding in April, just to give you an idea.

  • Start by looking into the requirements to get married in each country.  That may help with a decision.  For example, if you know you can't accommodate the required residency period for one country, you can look at the other instead.

Then start checking our resorts/venues.  Have a budget in mind and appx. numbers of guests.  Most AI's offer packages.  From there, look for reviews and keep planning as per usual.  While you may not be able to book anything specific at the moment, you can have what you want in mind when it does become available.  And you can also give your guests a rough time/destination so they can begin planning finance wise.

  • I would highly recommend with a travel agent early in the process. I didn't and tried to do all the research myself because I felt like I had to have  a destination picked out before I contacted the agent. Big mistake, I ended up stressing out trying to narrow resorts and even countries down.

Big things to consider are: legal marriage here or at the location, how many guests do you plan on having, price range you feel comfortable with your guests spending which will determine resorts, family friendly or adults only resorts.

    Good luck with your planning!

  • I just contacted a travel agent yesterday because I was feeling stressed and overwhelmed. So I am hoping that should be a relief.

Where did you end up choosing for your location?
  • I was married in Cozumel, Mexico. And I didn't use a travel agent (their prices were higher then if my guests booked themselves).

  • We ended up going with Cancun (for ease of people coming for shorter trips and not wanting folks to be stuck in a long car ride once they got off planes) at Beach Palace (for lots of random reasons like wanting a private ceremony location, great beach, swim-up bar, children-optional, smaller resort, etc.)
