Suits Vs. Tux

My Fiance wants to buy suits rather than rent tuxedos... is anyone doing this? He feels for a little extra money the guys can keep the suit and not have to return it the next day. Problem is we are having trouble finding a place that can accommodate 8 or more suits of same color and designer. Any retailer suggestions that are not too pricy ? We've tried Macys, Lord & Taylor and Bloomingdales.

Re: Suits Vs. Tux

  • We're doing suits instead of tuxes, but we're letting the guys just pick their own-- from any store, in any price range, in any shade of gray, and they can rent or buy. That way, they're each happy with what they're spending money on but still coordinate.

We had the best luck with a little local suit shop. They told us they could easily accommodate all our guys, whether they rent or buy, and the prices are awesome. I would check with local places and also big chains like Men's Warehouse. I believe they were running a sale on suits recently for $200.

  • Your area might have somewhere that does custom too - my FI's suits get made by EPH Apparel, who come to our city and measure him twice a year, and there are always bridal parties waiting to do the same when we go. It's not necessarily expensive.

  • The easiest option is to tell the groomsmen to show up in a suit in x color (black, gray, navy)

If you dictate a specific suit, you must make sure it is under the lowest budget given by the groomsmen. You can coordinate with similar of matching ties.

We went with suits from Jos. A. Bank. Got everyone's measurements and ordered them all online with a 75% off sale so they came to $216 each (then all the guys paid H back). He added the vest to his. They looked awesome. We bought their ties; they wore shirts and shoes they already had.

Edited because I had numbers transposed!

  • We're doing suits. FI found a $250 navy suit at Brooks Brothers Outlet and is just having all of his groomsmen wear a navy suit & white shirt they already have, or buy one in their budget. The exact same color and designer is really not necessary. A suit is a suit.

  • I think that your FI is absolutely right!

Try Kohl's, J.C. Penney's for budget prices.  Men's Wearhouse often has deals, too.    Vests are not necessary for a nice, two piece suit.

  • That's what we are doing. Men's warehouse to rent would be $180. I would prefer gray suits but FI has black and so do the other guys so I just can't see spending the $$ on new suits or rentals when they already have acceptable ones Check Kohls and JC Penney for affordable options. I know jcp suit separates are 50% off right now plus they have a coupon (sale in today's ads)
  • We did this, finding a little local tailor who could order the suits and then we had them fitted and altered just before the rehearsal.  Five suits with ties and tailoring cost us less than $1,000.  I know it's the minority opinion, but I think if a couple is going do dictate dress, they should be the ones to pay.

I agree with this too, although I know it's not a popular idea. If you're going to be specific, anyway (it's different if you say "a grey suit" or "any purple dress" because then there's a lot of leeway and it's possible to buy, borrow, rent, or wear something he or she already has.)

  • This is what we did. The guys bought the suits though, ordered them online via Macy's. We waited for a sale and then sent the guys a coupon code for an additional 20% off. It ended up being about the same as renting tuxes. And they got to keep them for whatever.

  • Like lolo, we bought FI's suit at Jos A Banks for like 180 on a really good sale back in December. It's charcoal grey. The best man is probably going to wear a black suit since that will be more wearable for him in the future.

  • No bridal party but H and I decided on a suit for him. We bought it from Combatant Gentleman (combatgent.com). We got it in navy blue - $160 for the suit and we got a shirt for free (he had a code from either a referral or because it was his first purchase). The pants come unhemmed $5 at a local tailor to hem the pants. He didn't

I gave my dad the option of gray or navy blue and he went with gray from JC Penney - $150 for suit and he didn't need any alterations. If you wait for sales at places like JC Penney or Macy's, you can get suits for pretty cheap. The easiest way would be either to find a tailor or just specify a color preference and let everyone get their own.
