Sparklers!

I am wanting to do sparklers at my July wedding but not at the end of the night. Does anyone have other ideas as to when to incorporate this into the night? It won't be dark until around 9 since its in July? Thank you!

Why not at the end of the night? That's the most logical time to do it.
  • Make sure your venue even allows them.  Many venues do not.

The end of the night is the only time I find it works.   Who wants to stop the dancing or partying to light a sparkler?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Are you thinking of this as an exit? Or just having sparklers so that people can play with them if they want?

I've been to several weddings with sparkler exits. People usually do them BECAUSE PICTURES!!!!  By the time everyone's sparklers are lit, some have already burned out and the timing is off. Add alcohol and synthetic wedding clothing fabric to the mix and it's not exactly safe either. At a couple of the weddings, the photog was like "oh I didn't get the picture" and we had to do it all again. UGH. Major buzz kill.

  • Since you need to do them after 9pm when it's dark, the only time to do it really is the end of the night. I mean, you don't want to stop the party for something, do you? Unless you were going to do the cake cutting or spotlight dances really late, and wanted to incorporate sparklers then. I could only picture this if you wedding overall is pretty late (like, ceremony around 7pm, then dinner, then you could use sparklers with the cake cutting or dances).

How about using them in some engagement pictures, and/or at the end of the rehearsal dinner in some way?
  • I've never seen this work at a wedding (although it's been attempted at several)
  • At best, sparklers leave small holes in peoples suits and dresses , synthetics and natural fibers melt or burn.

At worst, gauzy fabrics burn. This is why many states outlaw them, and in others, they are simply not allowed in public places under fire laws.
Check and see, your venue knows.
  • I've seen it done, my SIL is a photographer and has gotten some great photos, but it wasn't with all the guests, it was usually just with the bride and groom (or an assistant) to get the effects of like the sparklers going around them while the B&G were kissing. Hard to explain, but they looked really cool
  • This is the problem with Pinterest and high expectations. The first sparkler exit "viral" picture was most likely a staged photo shoot and now everyone just HAS to do it. I was browsing pictures of my venue on Facebook recently, and there were some photos of an extravagant reception set-up. Turns out, it was a staged photo shoot. Sure, we can get some inspiration from them, but mostly, these photo shoots just make us all want things we can't afford or provide ideas that inconvenience our guests.

If you're going to do this, I'd recommend trying what @Erikan73 said and have your photographer take an amazing photo of you and your Groom with the sparklers.
