Wedding Dress Top

So I feel silly posting this, but I was just curious.  I tried on my wedding dress yesterday and everything fit from the torso down.  I do love the dress.  Basically, I am not well-endowed enough to fill out the top portion as it was loose on me.  I know that they can do alterations to make it tighter up top, but I am not sure what to do bra-wise.  The back goes down to just above my middle back I would say.  I was just curious what you all did or are planning to do for bras/bra cups?  They had the push-up bras at David's Bridal, but those are the ones that have the corset type thing coming down the from the actual bra and the bottom portion was digging into my hip.  I don't feel like cups sewn into the dress will help support me.  I guess I am self-conscious about my boobs being hidden by the top portion of the dress and wanted a way to give them a little lift.  I know my fiance will think that I am gorgeous no matter what, but I just wanted a little extra for my own personal satisfaction.  I bought a strapless, backless bra that will literally stick to your boobs, but it didn't seem to stay right, or maybe I wasn't putting it on correctly.

Anyway, are you ladies planning on doing a regular bra, strap-less bra, or having cups sewn into your dress?  I suppose it depends on your style of dress too.

Thanks!!

Re: Wedding Dress Top

  • I'm an A 1/2 (very proud of that half). Pretty much A if its a lace/unlined bra, small B if it's push up.

I'm getting the push up cups sewn in since my dress has a low back. I couldn't find a bra or corset that would go low enough, even the "super low back" ones. Good seamstresses will make them look however you want them to; have you talk to yours yet?

  • I don't have your problem with the top area (I'm an DD/E). However my dress was low in the back and couldn't wear a regular bra so I had cups sewn in and it supported me fine.

  • This thing works miracles. I've had several of them (and they're reusable) and have worn them with tons of different dresses and types of shirts. I even wore them for an entire day-- outdoors-- when it was nearly 100 degrees out so I was sweating a ton, and that sucker stayed put. You can place the cups slightly farther apart so when you latch them you have a bit more cleavage, and you can place them a little lower or whatever to go with the neckline of your dress. Plus their shape is perfect and looks totally natural.

A lot of sticky bras really suck, but this one just kicks ass.

Now that I'm done ranting about how much I love that bra, though, I'm a 34D so I need some support, and my seamstress has promised me that there's a way to sew in cups to get some support and "a little lift" as she puts it. I'm going to trust her and go for the cups, but I definitely have one of those sticky bras as my back-up.

  • I'm a barely B cup and my top seems like it's made for someone with a chest. I'm thinking of getting cups sewn in, but going to try on strapless to see if it pushes me up any. I think cups sewn in will be most comfortable throughout the day, but I haven't played with my dress yet to see what I want or what's possible.

  • I'm a DD, and I'm having the cups sewn in.  I'd originally bought one of the longline bras, but then I changed dresses to a corset back and that sucker will be laced tight.  I think the sewn in cups will give me enough support.

Me and my barely-A's are thanking you right now!

OP, I didn't fill out my dress at all. Given the style of top, I knew making the cups smaller wasn't going to solve my problem, so I just padded myself out. In my pictures my boobs look way bigger than they actually are; I'm not complaining though.

  • I have a secret trick/tip I learned from an MUA for ladies who are less endowed and want their cleavage to look a little more... amped up.

Take bronzer, and basically outline your boobs (so that crease at the top of your boobs if they were to be pushed way up, ya know? Trace that with the bronzer, and then down in between your cleavage). Use a brush or makeup sponge to blend so it's not too noticeable. I used to do this before my stupid boobs grew and it really works. I mean obviously it's not a huge difference but it definitely makes it look like you have a bit more there.

  • I am almost A on one side and full B on the other.  So, not only am I not well endowed, they are noticeably lopsided.  I wore a strapless Victoria Secret Bombshell bra.  Serious padding in that baby and enough structure to even me out.  And it looked totally natural in my dress. Probably won't work with a really low back though.

  • I had cups sewn in and was really comfortable without a bra. I didn't want to mess around with one or have it potentially show.

Thanks for the tips ladies!  @dolewhipper, that is what the seamstress suggested too, but the cups that she showed me were quite thin and didn't seem like they would support me that much.  Perhaps I could ask if they have push-up cups?  Ooh @novella1186, that looks like a great idea!  I shall have to check that out, thanks!  That also sounds like a neat secret trick with the bronzer.

Thanks for the tips ladies!  It took me awhile to accept my 34A breasts, but now the dress thing has made me self-conscious about them again.  I wish mine were bigger so that I could fill the top out more, but it will be ok.  I know that I am well proportioned and my breasts do not define me.  I know my FI loves me just the way I am.  It will sound corny, but I also am accepting of my body.  Sometimes I just wish that I could take fat from my thighs and move it to my top.

Anyway, thank you all for your tips!
  • Let me tell you something. For years I was a size A and I hated it. Hated it. That's why I know the trick with the bronzer, and I could tell you a million other tricks about sewing extra padding into bras and bikinis and what kind of cuts are conducive to extra padding/a better illusion of bigger boobs. I put SO MUCH EFFORT AND STRESS into trying to make it seem like I had bigger boobs.

Then in my 20s they started to grow and before I knew it, I was a D. I hate them. I wear much more conservative clothes because I have cleavage even when I don't want to. It's really hard to find bras/bikini tops that will cover me the right way because I'm still tiny. When I play the piano or draw or whatever, they get in the way. When I work out, they get in the way. There are certain types of dresses I used to love that I feel like I can't wear anymore cuz I look like a bimbo. People make assumptions about me because I'm just a "skinny girl with big tits" so I must not have a brain (never mind that I have a masters degree and work in clinical research. Nope, I'm a bimbo.)

I would give anything to go back to my small boobs. I've even considered having a reduction, although I've heard they're quite painful and expensive.

So the grass is always greener.

Rock your A-size boobs and love them! They deserve love. I'm sure they're beautiful (cuz let's be honest here, boobs are great no matter what size they are!)

From one D to an A, I am jealous of you.

  • Awww...thank you for the encouraging words @novella1186!  You are right, the grass is always greener.  I should rock my A-size boobs!
Those issues do sound frustrating and I'm sorry!  Yours deserve love too!
  • I had cups sewn in.  I wanted a lower back and didn't want to deal with strapless/stickies/whatever.  I'm a B/C, depending on the band.

However, for a strapless dress I used to own, a speciality bra shop put me in a bustier.  The strapless just strapped me down, but the bustier gave me great cleavage in this dress.  And it slimed down all the bumps and such, similar to spanx.

  • Work those small boobs, girl!

I bought THESE (<-- clicky) when I wanted to look BAM (or just fill out) in a bathing suit. Its an insert kind of what you would find in the lining of a push up. It is very similar to what my seamstress is adding to my dress.

  • I have never had a problem about filling out a top, I have the problem of NOT fitting into a top.

Anyway, I have a sheath dress so I'm wearing something like this

with spanx pulled up over it. I know it's really sexy and totally what you want under your wedding dress.

  • I would say definitely go for the built-in cups! I had them added to my dress (it's got a keyhole back) and I couldn't be happier to not have to worry about doing the strapless bra dance lol (I'm a 32C for reference). Plus, keep in mind that your dress is going to look so different once it's altered and perfectly fit to YOU!

Everybody feels self-conscious about some part of their body (I'd also be happy to move fat from my thighs to my boobs). But I am fully confident that you're going to look absolutely stunning on your wedding day (and every day).

I second this I'd give up my boobs in a heartbeat. They DO always get in the way, they're a literal pain, and I just feel like there's so many logistics involved. Thanks though @novella1186 I have been searching and searching for something to wear under my pretty much backless dress and all the stick on bras have bad reviews. So if you're a D I figure this will work for a C.

Ideally I wanted a backless strapless sort of bodysuit or slip to hold EVERYTHING in. But I can't find anything. They just don't make anything that is both backless and strapless where the back comes down to your lower back. (And that isn't a thong.)

@kmbay84 rock your A's. You have so much more freedom and I'll bet you will look fantastic.

  • I am a small B and had a low back dress. I purchased the back less strapless sticky bras at DB for $30. Worked fantastic with my dress (although I did use  fashion tape to tape my dress to it because when I leaned over you could see down my dress).

I have used the bra a few times since then with backless dresses too!
