Evolution of the Honeyfund?

I was just perusing a bride's wedding website (mother of the bride posted the link on Facebook...yeah...) and decided to look at their registry. I probably won't be invited to the wedding but I was just curious.

They had some of the normal items...towels, sheets, etc. There were some questionable things, like beauty supplies for the bride. Okay, a little odd but whatever. There was a cash fund for their honeymoon and a cash fund for a charity they want people to donate to. Tacky, but unfortunately not that unusual these days. Then I noticed a whole new level of tackiness....they had cash funds for their WEDDING VENDORS. They are literally asking their wedding guests to pay for their wedding.

I really hope this does not catch on like the Honeyfund did...

Yeah, my travel agent for my Honeymoon is encouraging me to put a link to a place where people can buy gift certificates for our honeymoon instead of giving cash.

Someone here mentioned that a venue had packages that guests could buy to increase the experience. Like fireworks and stuff. No wonder brides think this shit is a-okay.

This is why I try to tell all my friends that are wedding planning not to trust their vendors when it comes to etiquette. Vendors are about making as much money as they can. They dont care if it's rude to your guests or not.

There was a post on "another website" where a bride asked how much she should charge for drinks at her wedding and how much alcohol to buy so that she can make enough profit to pay some of the vendors and use the rest for her honeymoon.

My jaw almost hit the floor, especially when a few people (luckily, the minority) agreed that it was a good plan!

We had a long ass engagement so we'd have plenty of time to save every penny for our wedding ourselves, and it makes me irrationally angry that this couple is basically trying to freeload off their guests. But yeah I guess I'm not really as surprised as I am disgusted.

I had a former roommate get married in August. (I wasn't invited, but she posted to Facebook about when Macy's was having sales, to let people know that it was a good time to buy from their Macy's registry, and then linked to her wedding website, so of course I looked.)

They also had one of those Zola "dream funds" and had three different categories - "Wedding fund" "Honeymoon fund" and "Happily Ever After fund." Each of the categories had a goal of $5000. EACH.

Yeah, I had some friends registry for a helicopter ride for their HM. I though that was so cool and while it was a little over our budget I got it for them.

Then 2 weeks later they bragged how they just picked high priced experience for the money. You see when I bought the gift I actually thought I was buying a helicopter ride. I later found out I was just giving them cash minus the fee. Had I had know I would have just given them money in and NOT spent the extra on the awesome experience.

You realize the Honeyfund sites take a cut, right?

Instead of getting $100, you're going to get around $90. Why not get rid of the tacky registry? People have been giving cash at weddings for decades. You can use that cash to pay for your honeymoon *without* getting charged a fee.

Yikes!

There's a wedding buy/sell group I joined in my area, in hopes of selling my dress, but of course I see every freaking post that comes up (I don't want to entirely disable in case someone posts on my dress).

One bride was asking about open bar options. Others tried to tell her that if they charge *ONLY* $2 per drink, that they were able to MAKE MONEY OFF THE WEDDING! Gah!!!! I tried as politely as I could to explain how guests should be hosted.

Actually- what irks me the most, is in a bunch of these posts, when less than etiquette approved advice is given, that bride usually says, "well it's what worked for us" like that makes it better. GAH.

Hopefully if people stop paying into these honeyfunds/vendor funds/ etc they will go away when these companies stop getting business from them.... Right?

Just had a friend try to do this. All kinds of items on the registry for decorations that would be used at the wedding, specifically asking for a donation to the wedding since they "had everything they needed already". I was specifically asked to purchase champagne for the reception when I asked if the bride needed help. Apparently that was my bad for not making it clear that I didn't mean financial help.

I will never understand this mentality that your wedding is a charity case. It's a privilege to have a wedding if you can afford it or if a loved one offers to pay for it, not a right that should be bestowed upon you. Yuck.
