dress shopping

What are the bridesmaids expected to wear while wedding dress shopping?  I've never been dress shopping before so I have no idea.  There's also a maids brunch at the bride's home the morning before.  I imagine this is all very casual, but casual to me means different things to different people.

Also, would it be horrible if I have to bring my toddler shopping?  Daddy is working and he's never had a babysitter and everyone that could watch him is in the wedding.

Thanks!

Re: dress shopping

  • I think you would be okay wearing anything really, but if you're concerned I would just ask the bride.

I would also definitely ask before bringing your toddler along. If he wasn't explicitly invited I would assume that just showing up with him would not go over very well. The bride may have an idea of just the girls being there and the stores may not actually allow young children in because they can potentially ruin their sample dresses. I'm in no way implying that your child would destroy a dress, but I'm sure it happens.

  • You can wear whatever you want, but I would highly recommend bringing/wearing a strapless bra and nice underwear that cover your bum. You may be fitted by an attendant and it is embarassing to have them put clothes on you/measure you with your bum hanging out.

I have never seen a child in a salon that wasn't being fitted for a dress/tux. Like pp said, definitely check ahead of time because salons can be very particular. It would probably be best to leave him home, though, because you are likely going to be trying on many gowns and having a small child there could be hard.

  • Thanks.  The bride already told me it would be fine to bring him and her mom said she'd be happy to help me out with him.  The bride just called and told me she picked her dress yesterday with her mom.  So I guess there won't be hardly any dress trying on.  We're a bit confused about what we're doing there since she already picked the bridesmaid dresses and now her dress, but whatever.  Sounds like it should be fast, whatever it entails.  If he gets crazy I can put him in a stroller.  I really don't want to take him but I have no one else around who could watch him.  Worst case I can just leave since, like I said, we're not really doing anything there anyway.

Strapless bra is a good idea- I didn't think about that.  Thanks!
  • Chances are you will be just getting the measurements done so she can order the BM's dresses in the correct size.  :)

  • I assume that too, except one bridesmaid is currently pregnant, two are trying to get pregnant, I'm trying to lose weight, and we still have 8 months.  So that pretty much won't work.  Oh well.  It'll be fun to get together at least.
  • Besides the strapless bra, wear tan or white-colored underwear in case the dress is a light color (I obviously don't know what her wedding colors are).  Of course make sure you are clean since you might be trying on dresses.

I would dress appropriately for wherever the brunch is.  I wore jeans when I went to pick out my wedding dress.
