Wedding Invitations & Paper

Is it weird to get invites that don't match the theme at all?

FI and I are sci fi nerds and are having a (classy) space/night sky themed wedding. We're mixing constellations into our decor and having a Doctor Who themed guestbook, etc. I have found some pretty constellation wedding invitations, but I just feel like I'm going to look back at my invites and think they looked kiddish or kitschy (I don't now, but I worry I might in the future, or that guests will think that). Would it be weird to have an invite completely unrelated to the theme? Will people be confused about our theme if we don't include it in the invites?

Not at all. I chose invitations that were pretty. That's it. Unless you're on Four Weddings or it's a costume party, I doubt anyone will even notice that the invitations aren't 100% themed. I think themed weddings become too birthday party esque when the theme is EVERWHERE. You're fine.

  • I agree you're fine not theming the invitations with the rest of the wedding, but if you want to do it, why not? I really don't think you'll suddenly start to find constellations childish in 20 years.

OP, are you a big scrapbooker? Will you even know where one of these invitations is in 20 years? That's the main reason I wouldn't worry about it. I think a constellation-themed invite would be classy and lovely.

I'm not, but one of my aunts always gives everyone in the family who gets married a gift of the wedding invite in a really nice frame. My mom still has hers hanging over her fireplace.

In that case, I'd definitely go for the themed invitation. It will look spectacular on your wall.

  • I think themed weddings are weird.  JMHO, and I'm a sci-fi nerd, too.

Okay...? It's not against etiquette to have a themed wedding and we're not doing anything tacky, so I think we're fine. But thanks! And thanks ladies! We're gonna go with a classic/plain invite.
  • There's no reason your guests even need to know the theme of your decor in advance, so what's there to be confused about? As long as they convey the overall formality of the event, it doesn't matter if they do that with something like flowers rather than stars, etc.

  • Classic, plain white invitations indicate a very formal wedding.

  • I think that as long as your invitations correctly indicate the formality of your wedding, whether or not they match the theme won't matter if it won't affect what the guests do or don't do.

Okay thanks! And thank you everyone else who replied! We'll definitely just be doing some plainer invites then. We're having a fairly formal wedding.
