not photographing well

Has anyone tried on a dress and loved it..but then realized it looks terrible in photos? Do I get the dress because I like it or go with one that will look beautiful in pictures forever

Re: not photographing well

  • usually the photos your friends take of you suck. I look terrible in all the ones my BMs took, but the selfies I took I look really good in. Most people make terrible photographers. Its all about the angles, and your photog should know how to capture that. :)

  • Do you mean pictures you tried to take at the store?  Don't rely on how those pictures turn out.
If you know the dress designer and style number you might be able to see other brides who wore it on their wedding day and how their pictures turned out.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about pics you take at the store - especially if you were wearing a sample gown that's been pulled back and clipped. The dress will look much better once it's a) your size and tailored to fit you and b) you're not in inside-the-store lighting.

ETA - if your concern is that the dress doesn't have enough sparkle in photos or something along those lines, keep in mind you can always add a belt, a sparkly hair piece, etc. to get more of that look if you want it.

  • Alterations.  When you try on a dress, it hasn't been tailored to you.  You haven't tried on 10 kinds of shapewear to find the perfect item to smooth out this or that.  Consider this in your thoughts.
  • Thanks ladies, this is helpful. It's Mori Lee 2616 and I've had a hard time finding real brides in the dress online. There is a very very similar gown, Mori Lee 2609, that I found real brides pictures of, and the one or two that I found weren't doing the dress justice either. The ONE thing about the dress that I was wary of is the hem line at the top of the A-Line skirt. I'd like it to be super seamless but it looks like the real brides photos captured the seam too. The same skirt and waist hemline are identical on both dresses.

I think I'll go back today and try it on again. You're all definitely right though, it's not yet fitted, and the venues lighting will be better, and my photog is much more professional than cell phone shots. I just feel like the dress is so much prettier in person and falls flat in the pics i've found.
  • Ultimately, pick the dress because you feel however you want to feel on your wedding day in that dress.

And, yes, pictures taken of you on a phone in a dress that is (probably) not the right size, hasn't been altered, etc., aren't going to look as good as the dress will look when it fits and when photographed by a professional.

All that said -- I do think pictures can be telling. Ultimately, some fabrics photograph better than others. Some fabrics gloss over lumps and bumps, some high light them. Also, the overall shape of the dress and how that shape looks on you is very important. When I was dress shopping I sometimes would like a dress in person, but when I looked at the photos I found it made me look bigger than I am. I chose something that even when photographed with a phone makes me look slimmer than I actually am.

  • thanks for the input! I'm leaning towards just not getting the dress. It's the shape and the drop waist hemline that I don't like in the photos. I don't think that will change much... I'm still going to go back today but if I have any hesitation, I know that I'll instantly have buyers remorse and keep looking. I like to torture myself like that!

If you are not liking the overall shape of the dress, I agree, that is unlikely to change. Not everyone has the big crying "I found my dress moment" but you can definitely find something you love to wear.

  • I went back and tried it on....i kind of love it. it photographed "OK" on the phone...i sweet talked the lady into letting me take a few. I also spoke to the seamstress on staff and she said she'd most likely be able to help conceal the seam that bothers me. I'm still not having that dramatic grandiose dress moment, but I was excited to put it on again, so I think I found my girl.

Thanks for all the help everyone!
  • so quick update:

I had an another appointment that i had set and decided to keep 'just in case' and found a new dress. Adios to the annoying seam - it seems to risky even though the dress is beautiful and I do like it. But I found one I actually like MUCH better. Still no final decisions made though, except weird seam dress is out.

I think it's ok not to have that moment. I definitely didn't have the crying moment you see on TV. I was trying on my dress for the second time and knew it was it because I just felt happy and confident in the dress and knew I would look beautiful in it on my wedding day. It doesn't have to be a huge thing, or an overly emotional moment. It sounds like you've found one you love even more though so that's great! My best advice is when you find a dress you feel happy with and confident in, stop looking!
