Talk to me about Smartphones/compatible with Macs

edited February 2015 in Chit Chat
I currently have an iPhone that just went on strike last night and stopped working. I'm due for an upgrade but I can't afford the one I want (64gb) so I'm not using the upgrade and they are overnighting me a new phone.

Meanwhile, iPhones are so DAMN expensive, even with an upgrade, so I'm thinking about maybe deviating from apple and getting something else. The only problem is I have a Mac computer and LOVE it. I've literally had it for going on 5 years and never had a single issue with it. I also love using iTunes to manage my music. Music is the whole reason I want a 64gb. They don't make 32gb anymore(not iPhones at least), and with my current 16 I can't even put half the music I want on there.

Do any of you guys have phones that aren't apple but are still compatible with apple products? Or they aren't compatible but you love it enough that you don't care?

ETA: I just read online that you can only use apple products with iTunes. Uggghhh why is Apple such a dickhead?!

  • Which wireless provider do you use?

We have Verizon and I got my iPhone on the Verizon Edge program.  You pay for the phone in 24 monthly installments (no interest).  What I love about it is that, depending on the data plan you have, you get up to $25/month off of you plan by having a phone in the Edge program.  So when I bought my phone last year, the cost of the phone and insurance (I'm a clutz) comes to ~$27/month and we save $25/month because we go through a lot of data.   With that math, I ended up getting my phone for ~$48.  Total.  Maybe your provider has a similar program.

This is really good to know because I also have verizon. We just have the basic 2gb data plan so I don't know if that would give me any off but I'll ask them about it the next time I'm in there

  • Hmm... yeah, that may not be enough data to qualify for a discount.  I just tried to check on their website, but I'm not seeing a breakdown.  But it's worth a shot.  Good luck!!

  • Sorry, can't help except to say I really think you should stay with iPhone. My dad is a super tech geek and tried to use Android with his Mac. Even he got really frustrated and went back to using an iPhone. Maybe installment payments is the way to go-- I have T-Mobile and our program sounds really similar. 24 monthly installments, no interest.

This, I have a MacBook Pro and the iPhone 6 Plus.  They integrate so well together, there's not much work I have to do to sync calendars, music, etc...and I love that aspect of everything. I have had an iPhone and my MacBook for about 5 years now, so I may not be the best to post for a a comparison, because I've used Apple products for so long, but I honestly couldn't imagine going back from Apple.

You are leasing a cell phone. Understand that you do not own the phone at the end of your 2 year contract. It states in the contract for Edge that you are required to return the phone if you choose to upgrade your device after 6 months (and 50% of retail cost) and your phone must be in working order. No thanks. Not for me.

You can use Google Music with iTunes, you can set them to sync together, but Google music requires data to run - unless you have the music downloaded to your device. Double Twist is another program/app you can use to move iTunes music to Android devices.

But yes, truth be told, Apple does not play well on the playground with the other kids. It's typically better to stick with iPhones with Macs.

  • Can I also just say how BORED I am without my phone?! No Timehop, no Instagram... how am I supposed to know what I posted every year on this day for the past 2-5 years?!

For realz. I appreciate them overnighting me a new phone, but it's going to my parents' house 45 minutes away because I'm still on my parents' account even though I pay my own bill, so I won't have a phone until probably Wednesday sometime if I can meet my mom to get it from her. And I use my phone as an alarm clock and everything. What do they expect me to do? Use an actual clock or something to tell time? Listen to music on the radio like a technology-illiterate 70 year old?

Reading this makes me hyperventilate. It's disgusting how attached I am to my phone.

  • I had a MacBook and an Android phone for awhile. It was a PITA trying to make them work together. I spent a lot of time Googling "how to make this Android feature work with this Mac feature". It was so much easier when I got an iPhone. I also felt that my Android phone didn't age well and got really slow for everything and practically useless on the Internet after less than 2 years. I haven't had my iPhone for that long, but my iPad is holding up well (3+ years with no issues) so I have high hopes my iPhone will as well.
