Best Wedding Dress Styles For Younger Brides?

Hey ladies (and Gentleman),

I just got engaged to my fiance in November. I'm 18, and he is 22. He's in the Air Force. We are getting married July 9, 2016. I'm going to be 20 then, so still young. My biggest fear for the wedding is that i'm going to look like a child. What dress styles do you think are the best for younger brides? I don't want to look like a child in a woman's dress, but I want my family to know that i'm a woman now, not a child.

Thanks,
Lexi

  • Really it depends on your style. I wouldn't go into dress shopping with a specific 'I have to wear X kind of dress'

Try them all on. Focus on what you feel beautiful in. When you feel beautiful, you will radiate confidence. You will look like a woman in love on her wedding day no matter what. You wont look like a child playing dress up.

  • Agree with the above, with the caveat that I think ballgowns tend to look a little prom-princessy on very young women. The cupcake thing can come off a bit juvenile IMO.

Age has nothing to do with the style of wedding dress you choose. When you walk into a bridal salon they don't have a room of dresses for 18-25 year old, 26-34, 35-44, etc.

Try on a bunch on different styles within your price point and see what you like.

And you might look like a child, so try a variety of hair styles, veils, make up, etc also.

  • I would suggest going into a salon and the consultant what you told us. You want a figure flattering dress that won't make you look like a kid going to her prom, but a beautiful women getting married. Be open to the styles they bring you and just tell them excately what you like or don't like about each dress and they can adjust what other dresses they bring you based on what you tell them.

    Exactly this.

If you're ready to get married, you ARE an adult and you don't need to prove anything to anyone.

This is my personal opinion, but I would go with a timeless look versus stuff that's trendy (like a Kim K head band with strapless fit and flare with a ruched skirt). Also IMHO, sexy wedding dresses look "young".

Start looking at stuff you like and if you're between a few, post pics here and people will give you honest feedback. Good luck!

  • I ditto pretty much what everyone else has said especially @southernbelle0915.

In my opinion, trendy and/or super sexy dresses (Pnina Tornai dresses in particular) tend to look younger. I would go with something more classic.

Also, I highly doubt you will look like a child getting married at 20.  Plenty of people get married at that age. Remember that the average age of people getting married is just that, an average, which means there are people both above and below that age getting married in order to get to that average.

There are 3 styles offhand that I think you should be careful with. Not avoid entirely if that's what you love, but just pay special attention to.

    1. Princess looks, especially ball gowns. Probably avoid any kind of tiara. You may end up looking like a kid playing out a princess fantasy instead of an adult bride.

    2. Overly trendy and/or slutty looks. Those sheer boddess Pnina Tornai dresses come to mind. You may end up looking like a silly self-indulgent teen instead of an adult bride.

    3. Dresses that are too covered up, too matronly, and just seem "too old" looking. If you are in a dress that seems more suited for an elderly woman, you'll emphasize how young you are. Think about how helen mirren or meryl streep dress on the red carpet...they look fantastic, but those outfits might look a little ridiculous on a 20 year old starlet.

Aside from the attire, doing anything overly-matchy and/or overly-themed is going to come off seeming juvenile, too.
