Day Of Coordinator

Hi Ladies,

If nyone here has hired a day or coordinator, were you charged sales tax?

Thanks!

Re: Day Of Coordinator

  • We hired one. If we paid sales tax, I have NO idea. She just gave us a flat rate. I imagine if she owes sales tax to the state, she figured that on her own.

sales tax is for a physical item you buy and resale, so no there should not be sales tax on any labor-related activity.

now if the day of coordinator had to buy anything and is charging you for said purchases, then yes she can charge you the sales tax

  • No tax, but our day-of-coordinator cost includes a 20% service charge. She explained this covers her travel time expenses, liability, and planning fees.

Not always.  For example, we bought furniture and paid sales tax on it.  We had the furniture delivered.  We paid sales tax on the delivery service!   There is also tax imposed on other services too (tanning salons, limo services, lawn cutting services, extended warranties, etc)....it's not limited to just goods that can be resold.  And there are goods that are exempt from sales tax too!   At least that's the way it is here in NJ.
  • Thanks everyone!!

That's not universally true. For example, in my state, purchases of tangible personal property are subject to sales tax. The sale of certain services enumerated under state statute are also subject to sales tax -- for example, parking related services in my state are subject to sales tax. That is how it is in most states -- tangible personal property is always taxed, and some services are taxed too.

But I do think event coordination is unlikely to be taxable. OP would have to check her state laws to know for sure. At any rate, the person performing the service or selling the goods generally is the person responsible for collecting and remitting the tax.

  • What services are taxable is a state by state thing.  States I can think of off the top of my head that do sales tax on some services, but since I don't work in those states, not sure what:

    Minnesota
    Texas
    Hawaii
    New Mexico
