Hi ladies- I'm posting because I just discovered a weird change in TK policy that I wanted to make others aware of.
I recently e-mailed the administrators at TK asking for my account to be deleted and the entire backlog of my posts to be removed. Nothing against you ladies or the community here- it just so happens that I have a few opportunities on the horizon that have caused me to rethink my internet presence in general and made me slightly paranoid about people in RL potentially figuring out who I am on here by piecing together random bits of identifying information from throughout my posting history (nothing obvious like my address, full name etc). It's not a huge deal- I just knew that in the past it was possible to ask the powers that be at TK to completely wipe your account and I felt the easiest thing to do would be to take advantage of that, especially since my wedding is over now and I didn't really intend on sticking around.
Anyway, when I e-mailed TK administrators with my request they informed me that as of 2015 they no longer comply with requests for deletion of posting history, and will only oblige requests to delete specific posts if they fall under a very specific category (mostly things like giving out your address, SS number or other extremely personal identifying information). This is obviously a new policy that, though it was doubtless posted somewhere on here, I wasn't aware of, and I just thought it was peculiar. On the one hand I see the logic- deleting an entire poster's history can leave weird gaps in conversations and potentially remove important information that was beneficial to the community as a whole. Refusal to delete also stops "special snowflakes" from coming on here, asking questions, getting mad at the answers they receive, and then deleting their accounts, which theoretically leads to more people asking the same questions over and over again without that backlog of similar questions to see how similar (dumb) ideas were (poorly) received.
That being said, I think this change is overall a bad thing, and I'll tell you why. I've seen what went down on the Bump a few weeks ago- if you aren't aware, in short a change in the rules over there and a mass banning of "regs" led to a major backlash and hundreds of their users requesting their accounts be deleted and their posting histories erased. The admin over there scrambled to find a loophole that would allow them to not delete the posting histories of those accounts because such a large-scale exodus majorly impacted both the amount and quality of information that could be found on their site- I think they failed in that case, which was no doubt the impetus for this new policy over here. In a lot of ways their community was very similar to this one- the regs who were banned were blunt, no-nonsense women who dispensed great advice but often "hurt the feelings" of new users who came into the community asking dumb and/or inappropriate questions. The motivation behind the bannings was negative reviews from "special snowflakes" for the Bump's mobile app, complaining about the "meanness" and "snarkiness" of the community, which I believe to some degree is also the case with TK's mobile app.
So my (very long-winded, sorry) point is, I guess just be aware that this change has occurred and the fact that the advice you give and commentary you make on here basically "belongs" to TK now. I can see what happened to TB easily occurring over here, and whereas they had the recourse of depriving that site of their wisdom when they felt insulted and belittled by their policies, we do not anymore.
