Opinions needed: alterations required? Jewelry?

I finally found the perfect dress and got to pick it up today and am thrilled!

I'm just trying to decide now whether I need to get it taken in or not. The ladies at the store were suggesting it, saying it is a bit loose/baggy at the waist and under the bust, but they were also recommending their own seamstress and I'm not sure if it is really necessary or just more of an up-sell.

It'll likely be another hundred dollars or so, but I'm already over budget with the dress and trying to keep costs down as much as possible! On the other hand, I've already made an investment and may as well be all-in if it's needed. I'm getting conflicting advice from my mom/friend, so I thought some impartial opinions may be helpful!

I'm also starting to think about jewelry and am a bit lost as to what would complement the dress style-- so any advice re: jewelry and accessories would also be appreciated!

Thanks so much!

  • If you can afford it, it does need to be taken in a bit to flatter your figure more. I would also put the belt lower, closer to your hips. Where it sits now is a bit off of your natural waist and looks somewhat awkward because of that.
  • I see what you mean about the belt! Thanks, that's a great idea.

Thanks for the feedback- if there is one day I'd like my clothes to be flattering, it's got to be my wedding day. I might have to spring for the alterations!

Is $100 about right for getting it taken in?
  • Is $100 what they quoted you?
  • The one thing that you should absolutely spend money on is alterations.  Having a dress that fits you well will not only make your photos look better but make you feel more confident.  There is nothing worse then seeing a bride in a wedding gown that just does not fit her right.  So don't skimp on this cost. Take money from elsewhere (flowers, get rid of favors, etc) and get the alterations done.

  • Yes, looks like it needs to be taken in.

Skip necklace, a pretty earring would be ideal.  A necklace will compete with the belt.  Since the dress has details, keep the jewelry simple.
  • With that dress, I'd go with an awesome pair of earrings. I would skip a necklace. I think a pretty headband would also go nice with that dress.
