I too love mentalfloss.com and was going to suggest it. I check it out everyday. Lots of random and interesting information. They have a wide range of topics too, so there is always something to interest someone.
I love tumblr too. It takes a little while to find people to follow that you're interested in. Just do searches for shit you like and start following people. I follow some fitness stuff, some equestrian stuff, some dog stuff, some artwork sharing pages, some feminism/social justice type stuff, nursing and nursing student, and just random people that share stuff I like. If nothing else, it's always great for funny GIFs.
I like to read about conspiracy theories. Vigilantcitizen.com is a good one. Lady Gaga is a puppet of the illuminati, you guys.

@hicoco I fillow almost 1100 blogs on tumblr. Lots of them art artist's personal tumblrs. There are a million good cute gif ones out there. Lots of puppies and animals.
Before they started using a recommendation feature, I'd just search tags I was interested in and follow blogs that had a lot of stuff I liked. Then I'd branch out from there. Their recommendation thing is pretty good, and I've seen a lot of really awesome stuff and found new things to follow from it.
I also track some tags so that I can check in for new shit all the time. Interiors is a nice one, art, of course, recipes, things like that.
If I want to kill time I normally go to www.sporcle.com
I'm determined to get all the countries of the world. I have a major spelling issues, so it's pretty hard for me.
Also get all the presidents in order. I can name all 44, just not in order. I do well for the first 8. And the last 21/22. But for some reason those middle ones get me stumped.
What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

And webcomics. Pick a webcomic with a sizable archive and binge read.
